Something I learned today about the Optimus S processor and thought I'd share as I couldn't find another post on this subject. The processor in these phones are apparently dual core (MSM7627 dual core processor: 600 MHz applications processor, 400 MHz modem processor) and for those of you who would like to see some of the more detail information on these processors, take a look at this link which explains a little more about the processor.

I see a number of folks bring that up... but it is really a single core CPU. Yes there is a dedicated modem processor but it isn't used for general computations.

That said, it's a snappy little processor especially since it is paired with the same GPU used by the 1st gen snapdragon chips and only has an HVGA screen to draw pixels for.

I'm waiting for dual core smarphones but I'll probably wait until holidays 2011 so they can work all the bugs out of em and (hopefully) get the battery life in the same ballpark as the optimus S.

The MSM7627 isn't a dual-core CPU in the sense that it has two independent processor cores each with it's one or more threads. It's a SoC (System on a chip) that is comprised of a 600mhz single-core ARM1136 application processor and an ARM926 processor that handles everything else.

Think of the ARM1136 as your desktop or notebook's CPU and the ARM926 and your north & southbridge chipset, except on a single chip. :)

HTC Hero has the same set up, with 528 and 247 (or close to it). Judging the performance of the Hero, well you know, LOL.

Others post much better performance out of the Optimus than the Hero. Just the combination of hardware and no software bottlenecks.
