Otter box cases are out in stores

It dims the screen same as it did with my iPhone, however I managed to get a slight scratch on my screen so it's worth it. Aside from this case adding almost half an inch of thickness to this phone it's a sturdy case from a trusted company.

I received my Ballastic Maxx case last week. The clear screen cover is "textured" for some reason. After about a day, I decided to call Ballastic and ask them if the screen cover I got was defective. According to the nice person in customer service there is a "less textured" version of the screen cover that comes standard with the case. They are shipping me one of the "less textured" covers FREE of charge under the Maxx's warranty. I should get it sometime this week. Hopefully it will make the screen appear less grainy and darker than the original cover. If not, I will either put a stick on clear screen cover on the screen and keep the Maxx case or return it and get an Otterbox Defender (much more likely).

FYI I purchased the Ballastic Maxx case on line for $34 with the shipping.

The Defender screen protector is not textured and all the screen gestures work flawlessly.

They extra cost of the otterbox reflects the over all protection.

They allow enough screen real estate for the bottom capacitive buttons also unlike the Ballistic case

Here is how blurry the Maxxx screen protector is:

I do agree that the defender screen protector allows for better gestures but I must disagree about it not being textured (ie not clear, see below).

I received the so-called "less textured" screen cover today from Ballastic. Unless they sent me the wrong one, it looks EXACTLY like the one that I received when I purchased the Maxx.

Needless to say, I went to a local AT&T store at lunch today and got an Otterbox Defender case.
When I put both the Otterbox and Ballastic screen covers side by side there was a noticeable difference although the Otterbox screen cover is NOT crystal clear either. It simply is less blurry/cloudy than the Maxx.

Personally, I like the additional rubber protection at the corners of the Maxx but the loss of screen real estate for the bottom capacitive buttons is not worth the extra corner protection.

FYI, the MSRP of the Ballastic Maxx case is the same as the MSRP of the Otterbox Defender ($49.99) I found what I thought was a killer price on the Maxx ($34 shipped). Had I know that the Maxx's screen protector was so cloudy I would have waited for the Defender since I did like the way the Defender case protected my old Moto Droid X for the last two years.

I got mine today. I also picked up some tectiles. The guy gave me 15 percent off, so the tectiles were pretty much free.

love the case though.

Of the non-adhesive screen protectors, it is one of the most clear but not HD clear. Given the protection and the ease of all screen gestures, the overall effect of having the case is well worth it. At some point, adhesive screen protectors discolor and peel up making the device look less than seemly.

You can get the Defender and probably the Ballistic on Amazon for far less than MSRP. Who pays regular price when you don't have to?

I saw the review of the Ballistic and the defender but not the commando

I'm thinking they probably mean caseless when saying commando. Unless there is a commando case.

And thanks for the rights on the screen protector. Wish mine would ship from Amazon soon.

What I'm saving in price, $35 shipped, I'm making up for in time waiting.

Never said the Defender screen protector was HD clear. Take a look at the review video that I posted in AT&T accessories forum and see how much clearer the screen protector is than the Ballistic one.

I'm all about convenience, I'll pay extra if it means not having to wait.

My defender case was only $34.99 + $4.00 shipping from Amazon. You can find it cheap. Just gotta wait for a good time to buy!

Agreed, that is the case Now.

A month ago this was a Totally Different Story. When I was shopping for a case back then the Defender was Not Available At All. Sure some on-line vendors were selling it at a discount but none of them had any stock. Heck, I found some vendors were saying it was "In Stock" until you ordered one from them, then they told you it was not in stock. The reputable vendors did tell potential customers it was a "pre-order" item. Most on-line vendors had no clue when it would ship from Otterbox. Those that did post shipping dates kept pushing them back first to the beginning of July, then mid July, then late July then August. Heck some on-line vendors (on Amazon) are still taking pre-orders as of yesterday.

The Ballastic cases were also "pre-order" back then but they actually shipped at the beginning of July and were available at a discount when ordered a month ago. Now both cases are available on-line and at a discount which is probably what you meant by your statement I quoted above.

Reviews on these cases are great and are valuable information. Thanks to those people (like you) that took the time to do them and put them out there. Sadly, since the cases were not available a month ago for sale or review some of us made purchases without knowing the good, the bad and the ugly about each of these cases.

Some here might say "Why didn't you wait" which is a good question. Personally, given my lifestyle and work responsibilities (harsh environments) I simply could not afford to have/use the S3 without maximum protection in a case that meets my needs. If that means buying a Ballastic Maxx then an Otterbox Defender that is a price I am willing to pay.

I see otter box website has black ones and other colors coming soon. So I assume the stores only carry the black otter box commuter series?

Yes, that is correct at least from what I have seen.

I will probably get the black one even though my phone is white. I think it will look ok. Until the white with gray comes out.

I have an HD invisible shield screen protector, with a Ballistic case. I can't believe that I spent almost 80 bucks protecting this phone, but my ending result is phenomenal. The case gives me the drop protection up to 12 feet and the screen protector is almost unnoticeable. I don't use the added screen protector as the does make the phone display a bit cloudy. I would recommend this set up to anyone that is serious about protection and visibility.
