Over the air update this morning...

I seem to have lost the ability to install Clockworks Mod. I've installed it multiple time before without issue. It seems to install now, but when I hold Vol up, power, and home, I get the Android System recovery. Because of this, I'm unable to root.

Are you holding the buttons for too long? I read that if you hold it for 3 seconds after the screen turns on, you get normal recovery. If you release immediately after the screen comes on, you get CWM. Haven't tested that yet, though.

Also, why do you need CWM to root? The most popular method involves flashing via ODIN...though I don't think there's a root injected image for LH9 yet. I rooted the LG1 then upgraded to LH9 and preserved/restored root with OTA Rootkeeper.

Update fails to install on my rooted I747. Short of un-rooting the phone is there a workaround to get a successful install? TIA!

As far as I know you cannot install it without unrooting. This is simple, however (assuming you don't have a custom recovery as well). Install OTA Rootkeeper from the Play Store. It's a very straightforward app that lets you temporarily unroot your device. You can now install the update. Once it's up and running, go back to the app and restore root. Done!

If you have a custom recovery you will need to get back to stock first. I had rooted stock with CWM so I had to do that. I followed the instructions at XDA and it worked fine:
[How To] Install OTA and root. - xda-developers

I noticed that I can now resize the video box in Popup Play (video picture-in-picture)

The only reason I mentioned color is that the garnet red phone was released a couple of months after the blue and white. From what I was told at the ATT store, the updates are rolled out regionally so it appears CA regions may not have received it yet. I don't know anyone else in my area (SF) that has a GS3 so I have no clue whether it's rolled out here yet. Phone works fine anyway so it's all good.

Nice..hope it's working well.. nothing yet here in Marin, just north of the GG Bridge though.

There does not seem to be too much negative chatter for an update that's been downloaded by a lot of people. When I had my BB, there were always a whole lot more negative posts on whenever there was a BB update on Crackberry than what I'm reading on this update!
FYI, I have had no issues with this update at all.

Because ATT Blackberry updates break basic things, like the phone's ability to ring.

Still no update for me yet either! Changed sim card talked to AT&T they said they have no idea why I haven't reiceived the update so they told me to call Samsung. The first tech argued with me that I had to connect to my iMac and that it's not an over the air update! The second Samsung tech said that AT&T is just taking it's time releasing the update and that I'll get it soon. So it looks like no update for this S3!

Good luck at getting it. Tragic that no one seems to have an acceptable response. Former iPhone user here who loves my Galaxy S3 but recognizes that lacking in the Android world are the fantastic customer service and timely updates Apple provides. Hopefully that will change! Realistic assessment here with no intention for a flame war.

I agree with Newsman on the major problem with Android devices. I think it is the carriers that screw this up. Add to it the fact that the reps you speak with are almost all incompetent, and you get a major sub par experience.

I've been trying to get this update since I first heard about it a few days ago. I've tried updating OTA and with Kies and nothing has worked. I've talked to AT&T 4 seperate times and all they can do is transfer me back and forth between their various departments telling me their department can't help me. They can't seem to even understand the problem. "You can't connect to the internet?" No, I can't connect to your servers to get the update. "You can't make phone calls and have no service?" No, I can't connect to YOUR SERVERS! Arrgghhh!

So, I now still sit without the ability to update (I have not received a single update since I bought the phone and am still on build UCLEM), and no idea if I will be able to update to JB once/if it's ever released for AT&T. I guess the one benefit to zero updates is that I have global search still, but I don't use it enough to care.

Has anyone else received zero updates thus far?

Oh, when I try and update I get the error saying connection to the server has failed or something like that.

Try this, Download samsung kies and try downloading the update from there. There have been 2 updates to the AT&T versions that I can recall. The first one I had no luck with OTA, I used kies and had no problem. This update came along and I was worried I would have the same problem but I did it OTA and went smoothly.

I have a rooted GSIII (UCALEM) and tried to update OTA.....OTA didn't work so I updated via keis.... messed up everything. Finally managed to restore a backup and haven't attempted the update again. I'm thinking about trying to get it again tho.

Has anyone tried a temp:unroot w/root keeper, update and restore root?
Anyone?????

I've tried rebooting the phone and it didnt work. AT&T also had me pull the sim a bunch of times to try and make things work, but again to no avail.

I can't update via Kies as whenever I connect the phone via USB it doesn't get recognized by Kies and say's "connecting" forever (Mac), and when I connect via wifi it finds the phone but disconnects as soon as I elect to do the firmware update.

I also just tried using a PC to do the stupid updates and when I download Kies from Samsung's site and try to open via Windows 7, it crashes and won't open. Go figure...

The reps at the ATT store told me that the updates are rolled out by region and not all at once. I think patience is the key and it appears that a few folks on this thread have had some problems after installing. Since my phone works just fine, I'm not that eager for it anyway. If you look at one of my earlier posts in this thread where the Samsung chat rep provided the details of the update, I don't see anything earth shattering of any 'must haves'. Frankly I think I'll wait until the JB update and then wait some more to make sure there's no problems with it. Remember these updates are a collaboration between Sammy and ATT engineers so they'e not fool proof.
