P20 Pro recent app thumbnails blank

I have recently found that when I hit the square 'recent apps' button on the homescreen, the thumbnails now show as either black or white blank rectangles, with the app name above. Previously each thumbnail was a miniature of what was actually being displayed on that app. Any suggestions on how to get the proper thumbnail back?
