Paid $1,600 for LESS-THAN-PERFECT hardware! (S20 Ultra)

Hmm. Since the issue seems to be large aperture + laege sensor creating shallow depth of field, would this mean that if Samsung retained the variable aperture, this would not have been an issue?
I doubt that would fix everything

Thats a good question .

Like every video I watched mentioned the shallow field of depth, and also mentioned the fact it was due to the large aperture. So unless someone was expecting them to come out and replace the sensor I'm not sure what software could do. I mean the HTC M8 with duel cameras used both at the same time to create a depth, I suppose they could have tried something like that, but...

A couple of the videos I watched also said the 100x zoom was garbage but at 30x it was exceptional. One likened it to a car, just because your car can go 130 MPH doesn't mean you should drive it at 130 MPH or at least not very often. It's nice to have and know it can but really there's no need to max it out.

If all that is true, then yes. It would also mean complaints about low light use, as it would be limiting the amount of light in.

And this is why interchangeable lens cameras are so important to photographers. No single lens will suit every situation, which means tradeoffs in something like a smartphone.

Exactly.

Those tiny bladed apertures in the 9 introduce their own distortions and increase the chances of mechanical failures.
This is what pro lense has.

Notice it's price is as much as one of these phones.
It's optics blow any smartphone lense away.
Note it's light gathering capacity as well.
Even at this price it has its weaknesses and limitations...

This is the quote in English that the Korean Samsung rep said.

"First of all, we are sorry for the confusion about the use. The S20 Ultra model is equipped with a high-pixel image sensor, which increases the size of the sensor, resulting in a shallow depth of field and a longer focal length of 10cm or more compared to previous Samsung models. Therefore, when shooting a close object, the background may be blurred, or out of focus may occur. The focal length is determined by the lens specifications, making it difficult to correct with software. We apologize for not being able to fully explain the focal length in advance. Thank you."

I dont think S10 or Note10 any different, I dont have high hopes that anything will be fixed in Note 20. Unless they use different hardware
Well , the s10 came with UFS 2.1 and Note 10 + came 3.0 for better internal read/write speed , better placement fingerprint scanner, higher base storage and probably some other little things I'm missing at the moment. I hear the Note 20 will lose TOF sensor so few things will be changed, but will find out as we get closer.

Exactly or simply observe it's 10cm focus limit.
That's pretty close... even dedicated macro lens have near focus limits.

My ultra arrives tomorrow so I have no first hand knowledge, but from what I'm seeing in the reviews and articles is the only auto focus issue is on the main 108mp sensor at a distance of and closer than 10cm. Is that correct? If so, I can definitely live with that, the phone has 2 or 3 other lenses that can do it with no problems correct? I'm not sure what the fuss is about then but I guess I'll see in 24hrs.

You would not use superwide for close-ups. You can get a little closer with the normal lens but it's not really a close up shot. You're going to have to experiment to see what works for you.

I was thinking about taking my wife, maybe oct to best buy to see if she would like a new note. I was even gonna waste some money on a 5G that we can't even use here.
But if she starts having to work in Houston.
Maybe if she burns a tank of gas out of her f150.
She can find a place to use it.

She has a note 9 now.

She may not want to upgrade.

Pretty much from what I'm seeing that's the long and short of it... only your ant vids might suffer, lol.
Looks like a great unit :)

I see, well I will test the limits. I've seen great shots taken by the ultra in this forum and on YouTube so it's definitely capable of good pics. I will just take close up pics from 20cm and further and then crop the photo

I have no issues at 10cm

What bothers me I'll take a pic of a label at work and it's only a clear focus in a really small area in the center and the rest of the label would be blurry

A label on a bottle, right?
Back up a bit. The closer you are the more pronounced the effects of a wide aperture.

Lense blur is another quality as well. The blur factor changes at different points on the image because of optical anomalies in the len(s) and/or their configuration.

So maybe the camera just requires a little more effort then the typical phone camera? Not as user friendly but once mastered it's top notch? Kinda like a real camera?

If I have a camera.
It needs to do everything for me.

Most of the shots.
I bearly have enough time to get it in the camera mode.
Or the opportunity is gone.
