Im two weeks into my trial with the EVO and so far it is pretty good. I want to find something wrong with the phone but I really cant. It does everything well.
But, does not mean I do not have any reservations (still unsure whether I'll return it in a week).
Few of the items that make me question keeping the phone:

The email. The email client on the EVO is average at best. No way around it, the BB Curve (which I had only for a month) was phenomenal. But even my old Palm Pre did a better job.

The Batt. I was fully aware that it would be an issue but man does EVO eat up the Batt.

Podcasts. I travel quite a bit (planes, boonies) and I would like download the podcasts ) and listen at a later time, but EVO (android) does not offer an option (I tried sticher, google, listen, etc. and they're all flawed).

Anyone has pointers or tips?

I came from a Curve 8310 to the Palm Pre Plus, to the EVO. Haven't looked back.

The email client is usually the most important thing to the blackberry user. Check the Android Market for alternative e-mail clients that meets your needs. "Enhance Email" from Quantum Solutions, is highly rated and $9.99, but there are free or lower cost options that may meet your needs.

The battery- There are numerous threads that discuss how to maximize battery life on the standard battery, but to me, all of that is useless. The best option to increase battery life is to order an extended battery, but note that will increase the back size and weight of the phone. There is only one extended battery case for this phone but it is a ruggedized battery case with belt clip holster and it's worth every penny I paid for it. It also helps to have a car charger.

I don't listen to podcasts personally, but it may be that the default browser doesn't like them. There are alternative browsers in the Android Market. One of them is likely to meet your needs. Firefox or Opera mini may get the job done better, and both are free.

My personal advice is to stick with the EVO. It's the only phone I've ever had that can almost do everything my computers do. At least seek solutions that will work for you before bailing on the EVO.

Coming from the pre.....I have to agree with blu......stick with the evo....had mine since launch date and still loving it.....
the email client isnt the best by far but it is pretty acurate in getting you ur emails from the server
the battery issue fix for me was the just get the extended battery....only have to charge once a day on most days with a lot of usage....
STICK WITH IT........you'll be glad you did

I was a day one Palm Pre - user that held on as long as I could. After months and months of hoping for something better on Sprint, I decided to buy a used Evo a couple days ago, and I just can't believe what I've been missing! Its so weird to not have to wait for anything. The Pre was soooo laggy. Sometimes I'd have to wait like 5 minutes to open a webpage because the phone just took a HUGE dump. Also being able to download every app I could ever want is so awesome!

I do however miss a few things. The card view and gestures on the Pre was really slick. Jumping around from app to app was seamless as long as it didn't lag. E-mail was definitely a lot better also, and I loved that you could view all your email addresses from one view. Also the size of the Pre and being able to hold it easily in my hand was a huge plus, but I'm more than happy to give that up for a 4.3" screen.

That said, I'm really excited about the Evo and don't see myself going back to Palm any time soon.

Great points. I totally agree with your assessments of the BB Pre and Evo. I will look into the email client Dark Blu.
Guess Im looking for a phone a that does not exist. BB mail, multitasking of a Pre and the Speed of an EVO.
Btw, Schnoid, I felt the same way about the Pre. Held on to it to the bitter end (still curious about the Pre 3, but it might be too late) do miss the swipe and the keyboard.

I had a Palm Pixi and was very happy with it. After going to the EVO though, I have to say that I haven't looked back. I love the customization, large screen, and applications. I absolutely love this phone and couldn't go back.

I'm not curious about the Pre 3 cause its the same ridiculous design with a slightly larger screen but still not even 4" which is pretty standard now. Most importantly, no matter how good the Pre 3 is, HPalm lost out on the developers. Without apps, WebOS is pointless.

After Hpalm screwed early adopters as well as Pre Plus users that joke of a spec bumped Pre2 as well as not allowing WebOS 2.0 to run on Pre and Pre Plus, I don't really care what HPalm comes up with. I'll never go back. Not after having Android. Yea, the card view and e-mail client were nice, but the small screen, no Flash, and dwindling app market did it for me. The two phones they've announced are a joke. I can't see them getting too far in the short term with either.

Without apps and a user base, HP is going to have a problem selling the Pre 3 and that micro-Pre phone that's even smaller than the original Pre. Who are they going to market that to? Teenage girls? Almost everyone is going dual core and they stuck another single core chip in the Pre 3 and as noted, the dated design (that NEVER was a success) with a slightly larger screen. No thanks. EVO kills even the newest Pre and micro- pre.

Quick fix for the battery, from the home screen menu>accounts + sync>disable HTC stocks and weather (or what ever you don't want to sync constantly) and you will get a few extra hours of battery life.

Right now, I am getting around 24 hours off of one charge since I rooted and flashed up CM7. I am convinced that HTC has a lot of background services that just crush the battery. If you are up for hacking and rooting, it can really improve the overall performance of the phone.

I came from a Pre as well, and the hardware is top notch. I am just not a huge fan of the HTC software.

I was a Day 1 Palm Pre evangelist. Been using the Evo now since December. Not going back (although I miss WebOS). If you give details about what you want the email program to do, maybe we can suggest solutions.
As to podcasts, I looked around for the best replacement for Dr.Podder and found it in Doggcatcher. Well worth 6.99 price tag.

Complex thanks for the Tip. I had some HTC Junk running in the background. Delao13, I'll give Doggcatcher a try. Dr Podder was a great app, and I was looking for something similar. As far as email, looking for client that handle a Outlook/Ex. So far, K9 client is ok.
And Yes, I too, miss the WebOS
