Perfect Laptop

What's your idea of the perfect laptop?

I've been in the market for a new laptop for a while. I'm not sure I'll ever find what I'm looking for though. I have 3 simple requirements I've yet to fulfill:

1) Left control key MUST be on the far left, not the Fn key. E.g. order must be (Ctrl | Fn | Windows Key | Alt | Space ....). And no the Fn key and Control key can't be remapped unless it's specifically supported in the BIOS. Fn keys work different then other keys.

2) Absolutely no fans or heat ventilation on the bottom. Nothing drives me crazier then putting a laptop on my lap, working for 15 minutes and watching the temp gauge sky rocket and it start to lag. Fans / Vents on the bottom are the easy way out but a terrible idea. Macbooks have this one right. Venting out the top and under the keys is a great design. They however fail #1.

3) The right shift key MUST be a full sized key. Not one of those half sized keys. It drive me nuts to arrow up half the time I'm trying to hit shift.

Sure I could just retrain my hands for 1 and 3. However I'm on a desktop at work 75% of the time so it's hard to "Switch modes" when I'm on a laptop.

I don't do a lot of gaming so I don't need a screamer. I mostly just browse, do some programming, movies, music, chat, etc. So most specs above "netbooks" will work.

I'm mainly rambling / venting. However if anyone has any suggestions of manufactures to look at I'm all ears. I thought I found a Toshiba laptop that would be perfect but it was discontinued before I could track it down. :/

Anyone else have any laptop quirks they can't find in a laptop yet?

Actually I think I'm going to go with a Thinkpad. They're ugly as hell but from what I hear pretty decent. They also have good keyboards (with an option to swap fn + control in the BIOS)

Thinkpads have very nice keyboards and they stand up well. The new ones aren't so fugly, either.

ThinkPad Edge E420s now shipping for $699, E220s coming in April -- Engadget

I just saw that post yesterday on Engadget. I thought it was odd timing .. haha

My only issue with those are the screen resolutions. It drives me nuts that it's so hard to find a 14" laptop with a res higher then 1366 x 768. It looks like I'm going to have to buy a T series (probably T420) to get a higher res then that.

I also like that almost all Thinkpad screens are LED Backlit. I'm still researching though. It's looking like it'll be a T420 or T410.

I just have to determine if I can deal with the Intel graphics card. Nvidia auto switching card is gonna add to the price. I don't play game (much, not high end games anyway). I'm mainly concerned with HD video play back.

Evil apple empire !!;)

Windows/linux dual boot FTW

haha .. I'm not going to get into the whole Evil thing. Some friends have Mac OSX and it seems pretty cool. I just can't see a compelling reason to switch to it. Especially given the extra cost. If I used Garageband, etc it might be worth it. I personally wouldn't gain much from it though.

Not to fan the flames but I did run across this commercial when researching laptops and thought it was pretty funny:

Only the smart ones ;)

I don't understand the love for the MacBooks - mine's been nothing but trouble and was nearly unusable until I gave up on OSX and installed Ubuntu. The touchpad is awful, I and a bunch of people around me have suffered drive failures, probably because they run ungodly hot thanks to a poor thermal design. Nice screen, though. When this one dies (I'm guessing hard drive, within a year) I'll have work send me a Thinkpad instead.

I always thought they were great for not running hot. I thought there cooling system venting through the top was good. I'm not sure why I thought that though. I have no personal experience with them. I think I was just blinded by the fact they aren't vented through the bottom since that is a pet pev of mine.
