What, exactly, is a baseband? I did some searching, and nothing really explained what it us. I am running a rooted DROID BB v1.1 for Android 2.1 nextheme bekit 1.1ghz, is this baseband something I could install to get Froyo? Or would I need one of the 2.2 ROMs beforehand? Thanks for any insight.

a baseband is used to help your phone connect to the verizon towers better. It essentially will give you better service. I believe, i may be completely wrong. But that would explain why you need to reactivate your phone afterwards.

Cory is right. It updates the way your phone attempts to communicate with the network. After installing it should increase your signal strength and give you more bars in more places haha

Thanks for the clarification guys. I think I might follow cory's walk-through tonight and make the jump to 2.2. I don't think I can wait until Bugless Beast comes out with a 2.2 ROM, I'm not that patient.

If you have ROM Manager Premium you can now use it to install 2.2 very quickly. The instructions for that have been added to the bottom of Cory's original post.

You can actually use the free version of ROM Manager as well. I did it this afternoon, and used it to install the basebands as outlined in Cory's 2.2 walkthrough. It works great!

I've been running this Baseband update all day and it seems to be doing pretty good with Froyo (NexFro1.01).

Thanks for the heads up. I'll be sure to edit my other post and let cory know to update that one.

I'm not sure if anybody else noticed this but Pete's baseband is the same baseband update as the one p3 added a day or 2 ago. The match up exactly, unless Pete kept the same name but altered it. If its the same, I don't understand why Pete would take credit for it. Doesn't make sense.

It is my understanding they are almost the same. Pete claims to have tweaked it to be able to upgrade from any device. For example if you are using the p3 .01P you must first install .00R but if you use Pete's you can go directly to .01P. That's my understanding of it.

i installed pete's baseband after installing 2.2 from rom manager and when I try to reactivate my phone it says they are un able to do so. WHY? has anyone else gotten this?

I am getting this exact same message right now!!

I also cannot log into my Verizon account online, I get the following message: "System Exception !!! Please try again later... Sorry for the Inconvenience"

So I am thinking they are working on system maintenance -- I hope that's it!!!

Same here, in the meantime I am downloading and gonna try to install petes version of 2.2. Also, I am lucky to have astro and my apps backed up on titanium, so i reinstalled rom manager and used my wifi to have access to roms and basebands, however if verizon is down then i think its hopeless no matter what I install. All I want is a rom that doesnt drain my battery in 5 hours lol.

Let me know if anything works. I have a feeling that when I wake up in the morning -- it will go through. Problem is -- I won't be able to sleep while my phone is in such a state, lol!!

haha I know what you mean. Good news is I finished pete's 2.2 install and the market is pretty snappy, kinda paused for a minute but turns out in that minute it re-downloaded all my apps lol, so I am pretty impressed. I will PM you when I get my phone activated if I remember lol.

Yeah, and I had everything working great. The overclock, wifi tethering, flash -- all working flawlessly. So a couple hours later, I got greedy and decided to give this baseband update a try, and here I am, haha.

Hahah! the very few times I have messed up my Droid the second it got messed up I said to myself "Had to get greedy." I know the feeling but the beauty of this phone is that it is soooo easy to save it and restore a working ROM. If this 2.2 stuff and baseband dont work I can easily go back to i think BB 1.0 when everything was working and my battery was better then BB V1.1.

Oh and if you dont have titanium I suggest you get it, can back up and restore all apps + data at once. Time and pain saver.

Mine activated fine just now -- Verizon was probably just jacking with their servers last night.
