Phone calls

I posted this before but either didn't explain it too well or I am the only one with this problem. When making a phone call from my note 8 most are to people in my contacts. When I click on the phone shortcut it automatically opens showing "recent" and it seems that the only options are to have it open in recent or keypad. While it is a simple thing to select contacts it is annoying. As the whole purpose of touching the phone shortcut is to make a call it seems ridiculous not to have this option. This has only happened since updating to Oreo. I am in the U.K. with O2. The O2 guru don't know the answer. Hopefully this will be remedied with a fix. In the meantime does anyone know of a work around.
I could of course click on the contacts shortcut, but that doesn't give me the option of using the keypad should I wish to.

Click on Phone
Click on the keyboard icon
Click on the three dots in the upper left
Click on 'Open to keypad'

How does this address his question? I see no option to choose the Contacts tab in there. Does yours have that option?

Sorry, I misread his post. I thought he wanted to stop it from opening to recents.

Seems that the only option is either to open in Keypad or Recents.

swipe left to call right to text, or the other way around. if you don't have that you can change it in settings.

I'm not sure I really understand the issue. Use the phone icon for the dialer or use the contact icon to open contacts. The phone shortcut is doing what it's supposed to do. If you open the phone but want to find a contact tap on the contacts tab or what I do is just start typing the name in top search bar.

The issue is that when opening "phone" there is the option to always default to "recent" or "keyboard" but not "contacts" which for me is there primary object. If I tap the "contacts" shortcut then I don't have the option to open keyboard. To do that then I have to go back to phone. I am sure that this has only been the problem since Oreo.

Is the issue that you can't make contacts the default that the phone icon opens to or that it's not even an option when using the phone icon?

When I open the phone icon I see resents and have an option to switch to contacts or dialer and can switch between them from any one to another.

See screenshot has all three options to flip from any one to the other.

Edit: After playing around with this a little bit more I've also found that my phone opens to the last used option. If I last used the contacts screen to place a call that's what it opens to the next time, even if I go in and view all open apps and close the phone app, it will open back up in the last used option.

Thanks Connert. Yes the issue is that I can't make contacts the default when the phone icon is tapped.
No matter if I opened recent, contacts or keypad last it always reverts to recent. By making a change in settings I can make keypad the default but not contacts. Can you tell me if you are also using Oreo?

I am on Oreo, installed about 4 days ago. I'm still trying to sort out several small issues myself.

No this is not because of Oreo. It's working as Samsung intended. Opening phone primarily gives you phone options. It only takes one extra tap to see your contacts. It's really not that big of a deal. Contacts won't give you a keypad because it's a contacts app. You might want to look into a third party contacts app to see if it gives you what you're looking for.

I knew I fixed this somehow and was going to post but I couldn't figure out how as the options seem to have changed.

I noticed on the keypad view though that there was a red 1 by the 3 dots with a new setting to open to keypad.
I selected that and then pressed the dots again and selected open to most recent.

It still defaults to last used wich will pretty much always be contacts. App version is 2.3.03.27

Guess I will have to live with it unless I can find something else. My phone app version is 3.0.10.8

I'm sure you're just remembering it wrongly. I have had Samsungs since the original Galaxy S and none of them had the option for the phone app to open directly to contacts.

The phone app is behaving exactly as designed.

Thanks for that. You are probably right. Just seems odd that you can make either recent or keypad default, but not contacts.

I don't have my S7 right now, but I do have an S3 and a Galaxy Fit lying around in my drawer and I checked. None of them has the option to have the phone open up to contacts. So it's not odd if the phone app has behaved that way for 10 years (the Fit was from 2009 I think).

I couln't find an option to make Recents default but making last visited should do the trick for you if you almost always use contacts. Seems fine for me. I just think they have moved it out of the main settins into the set that is only present for the keypad.
