Phone only ROM?

ok, I've kept my noise out of this so far, but I completely understand where the OP is coming from.
I use my V mostly as a minicomputer... but I detest the bloat and background data/CPU hogging that comes with every ROM I've tested. I have to manually remove all kind of useless (to me) crapware every time I test a ROM update to avoid a bunch of junk running at startup, eating my RAM, and transmitting who-knows-what to who-knows-where.
asdullah's response seems to have been the most useful, and leslieann made a good point about being careful what you delete.
most posts have been poking fun at what I see as a legitimate question.
boo.
just because most people like things running as they are built doesn't mean everyone has the same desires or needs, and no point giving them trouble just because of a request for something lightweight.
sure, I bought this V for use as a computer, but I personally have no more use for android than any other bloated OS, it just happened to be what came with a usable device. I've been working around its shortcomings but not everyone wants to experiment and risk a bricking...
/end rant

All those processes and things running in the background is what android does, if you don't want it to do anything then buy a brick.

I didn't buy this device for android, I bought it for its actual capabilities, accessible device drivers, and the ability to use the evd0 network. And it rocks pretty good once you kill off all of the android junk.
not to mention, android still runs just fine without 75% of the crap installed by default.

huh, a little tiny flame war over someone wanting less instead of more. between this kind of thing, all the whining at xda over how aosp isn't answering every little question in his rom thread, and complaints over his attempt to streamline installs for noobs (even though I don't like ROM manager, I sure wasn't complaining about it in the dev thread,) I can certainly understand why the devs get so pissy over stupid questions.

my point here was about how lots of people are trying to dis the OP, but very few are offering any kind of actual solution or advice. I doubt the thread was posted as a joke, it was a serious request by someone who doesn't want to build their own ROM.

Sure, you all can poke fun at people and tell 'em they are idiots for buying a smartphone and not wanting all the extra crap that comes with it by default. That'll make everyone get along great and really encourage people to ask for help :D

I, at least, feel for the OP. Enough that I'm going to take a stock VM rom for the phone, remove every bit of extra crap that isn't neccesary for 3G, messaging, and telephone, and post it up for him as soon as it's ready and I've made sure it doesn't crash using the basic functions he asked for...

You fans of the status quo can all feel free to jab at me, as well as the OP, because I can relate a lot more to the first post than any of the suggestions to go get a 15 year old cell phone you can't even activate anymore. Or maybe a piece of crap like the Kyocera Jax I paid $15 for when I started using VM, that you can't even update the PRL on.

Ok that was low of me and I'm sorry, I got wrapped up in the moment. Seriously though cant you just use titanium, or something of that nature, and freeze all the stuff you dont want. You could even use a root uninstaller to remove it all. Then make a nandroid and you would have it backed up in case you ever needed it again. I may be wrong but that seems the best way to utilize the features of the optimus while getting rid of crap you dont need.

PS. Squid I purchased the Incognito as my first VM phone while it was 50% off at target on black friday. I think that might have the Jax phone beat for worthless phone worth mentioning. ;) I am willing to ship it if anyone wants it lol.

good suggestions. not sure if the free titanium can freeze (it was suggested earlier in the thread as well, I forgot to mention that post as one of the legit ones)? And, even if it can, it could have the same issues as the root explorer... like leslieann said, if you remove the wrong things, the phone may go dysfunctional, so it's not really a good option for noobs.

I'll have to check out the incognito specs, that jax was pretty horrid on VM. Couldn't install anything at all on it except some social apps. ugh.
edit: oh, man the incog kicks the jax all over the place. a memory card, touchpad, decent resolution, and camera? that jax was as close to a brick as I've owned in a while. reminded me of the stuff I owned back in 2000.
more edit: at least you can get usb drivers for the incognito, that jax was locked up tighter than a politician's truth-telling function.

The incognito is pretty similar, from what I understand, to the Mirro? All I know is that every "app" installed on it required I pay to use it. Lot of dating/chat apps that you could "try" to get rid of.

You're right in that tb might not freeze on the free version, I'll look at market and see if there is a free freezer...certainly should be I would guess. There is almost always a free version of a paid app that does the same things or sometimes even better. :)

AntTek App Manager * Root and SystemApk Manager both freeze system apps. Should be all you need but I believe they both, or at least SystemApk, also allow you to uninstall them. Personally, for most of the apps, I would freeze as opposed to uninstall. You don't save any personal app space and if you uninstall something you need well...restore time.

If you aren't sure about what gets sent out for permissions by one of these or any other app. You can also use LBE Security Service which allows you to see what sends what out and block them from doing anything you don't want them to.

Like I told the OP (who is starting to set off my troll detector) you can always find a ROM like aosp and not flash the gapps. Or use Harmonia which is about as stripped down as you can get. The only apps that I see that slow down the phone is the virgin bloatware which is removed in Harmonia. I have a ton of stuff on my phone and have no slowdown at all, but then again I have mine overclocked and juice defender running on aggressive.

Why has everyone been so MAD on the forums lately. One person says one thing then OH GAWD LETS BE INTERNET TOUGH GUYS. Jesus balls, everyone needs to chill out!

I had a little fun, it's true, but that's why I have stayed off of the aosp xda forum thread lately. Talk about angry android users...

Wow, I ask for a ROM that does less, and somehow started a flame-war. I use a very select few apps (that most of you would probably be stumped with just looking at them) all I asked for was a super lightweight starting point, not a bunch of posts attacking me and asking why the hell I bought an android. (To the Guy with the brick phone; can I have that? I want the oscillator from it baaadly). I already run several roms, mostly Reborn for battery life, aospcmod ffor media, and bumblebee for those apps you'll probably pass out from seeing. I frequently switch between the three depending on what I plan to do during the day. So I'm trying to come up with a Rom that will cover at least two or more of my needs simultaneously. I bought this device so I could eliminate the need for my computer, and have done just that (with the exception of flash). My computer is now boxed up and jammed in the bottom of my closet, and I only pull it out if I need to use adb, or one of the many circuit Sims I used to "need". I appreciate the positive feedback from the select few of you that provided it.

I was under the impression you wanted a pure "phone only" type of set up. Something very simple and basic. I think I am confused now as you are flashing 3 different roms to do things that a single rom should be able to do. I have tried them all but if you tell us exactly what you want than I'm sure someone can help you. Sorry for being confused it just seems you flip flopped between the OP and the last post.

I haven't flip flopped, I simply left out information to try simplifying the process of obtaining the ideal Rom. What I'm looking for is a Rom that will run only the service provider functions, so that I can have as much ram free as possible for the apps I actually use, as they require major resources. I guess I'm looking for a Rom that comes "naked" besides the phone service, SMS (mms), evdo connection, the browser, and maybe the market. This SO doesn't mean all I will use it for is talk SMS and browsing.

Well my mistake for taking your first post literally. I still stand by using, probably Harmonia, it's the cleanest I know of. Using one of the 2 apps I mentioned, or a group of others I'm sure, to freeze or uninstall the system apps you don't want. Shouldn't be too hard but we all know the ROMs we have available and we have probably tried every single one of them.

Thank you! Most helpful post in this thread by a long shot! I've uninstalled as much as I can, but it still seems to want to run "crap". I suppose its difficult for someone like me to know what processes are dependent on eachother on android, especially service related ones since you seem to need to have a degree to completely understand what's going on behind the curtain.

You could always do a nandroid backup and then go in and systematically start freezing things. Eventually you will find out what you can't freeze lol. I have everything I'm willing to try frozen. Even bluetooth and such because I don't use it.

I've been freezing stuff, a lot seems to be intertwined, I too do not use BT, but freezing it in aosp seems to prevent booting. Also, gmaps is uninstalled but seems to still be installed still; its used 42% of battery life today and I don't even have it. It doesnt show in root uninstaller either. Bah, I'm tempted to slap Ubuntu on this thing and find a program that can handle calls and SMS, so I can revert to using my old calculators and Sims, but handheld o.O

I just wonder why OCD starts acting up if somethings are running in the background? Even on a computer you have things running all the time that you don't see. Now if a specific app is causing problems then that needs to be delt with. Like I said try Watch Dog it will tell you if any app is eating more cpu then it should and ask you want you want to do with it by freezing, force stopping and you can decide if you want to uninstall it because its not worth it.

thats the link to the lite version if you want the full its about $3.00. Try it see if it helps.

Lol, if you want a minimal rom, don't start off with asop's CM7. It has loads of junk you don't want. I suggest you start with stock or Harmonia. You can uninstall the obvious stuff, and then freeze the stuff you are not sure about. Although, most items are not actually running even if they appear to be loaded into memory. I am on a Froyo rom and the only items that are running are the keyboard, messaging (stock text app), google voice, Superuser, and com.android.phone (phone core). And I have a TON of apps installed.

You don't need to freeze BT, wifi, gps....etc. Just turn the settings to off.
