Phone running hot while Idle

I am running CleanROM 6.0 with Verizon GS3.

When I am sitting in class with my phone in my pocket not doing anything, the core temp will sometimes reach 39 C or so according to Gsam. Both Watchdog and the Task Manager are showing that there are no apps/processes that are using any appreciable amount of CPU resources (the highest is like under 5%).

Any idea why this happens?

Could it be something to do with Wifi connectivity? I noticed that in areas of poor wifi signal, the phone tends to run hotter, is it because it's constantly searching and trying to connect to w Wifi network? I am on an University Wifi network, which is pretty fast actually.

The battery also plummets at a much faster rate during these cases and especially compared to when I'm on my home wifi network.

Also, is there some app that will let me monitor my total CPU usage? I know watchdog breaks it up, but is there any app that just shows total CPU usage of all prrocesses combined?

System Panel will show cpu usage by app and in total (as a percentage of 100% utilization. The paid version will also show usage over time (e.g., total cpu usage by app over the last 2 hours, 8 hours, etc.) I've found it to be the most useful system monitor I've tried.

You might try turning WiFi off when in class and see if that makes a difference in temperature.

This. If your on wifi and this happens at school it obviously is something with that network it doesn't like. Try without and see.

I have had this happen before, and my problem turned out to be a cell network issue. I have a friend whose apartment seems to be in a dead zone for data coverage. If I go to his apartment, my phone is constantly looking for data. The problem is made worse when an app is trying to use data. For instance, I used to have google + set to automatically upload pictures. If I took at picture at my friend's apartment, the phone would spend all night looking for a data connection to upload. Now that I am aware of the problem at that location, I just don't try to use data, and if I notice it being a problem, I turn data off.

If I heat up my phone via an external source, say like in a hot weather or if I accidentally leave it next to the exhaust port on a hot laptop, will the increase in temperature increase battery life in the short term? (I'm trying to rule out maybe my body heat as a reason for the drop in battery)

Excessive heat or cold will reduce battery life, but your body temp isn't enough to make a difference. Unless maybe you're an alien with a normal body temp of 125F or more.
