Phone screen went black after call

Had my phone since October. Never an issue before. Today I made a call, once I took the phone away from my ear, I noticed the screen was black. I tried tapping the screen, no response. I hit the power but, still nothing. Had a friend call me, went straight to vm. I kept pulling down the menu (not being able to see it) and randomly touching the screen to see if I had somehow hit the brightness tab by accident. I noticed that the screen would lighten up (lighter color of black). Then after a few minutes, I held the power button down, the phone finally rebooted. It has been working fine so far. Anyone else experience this before? ,TIA

I wonder if the proximity sensor was malfunctioning. Make sure nothing is blocking it (it's usually located near the earpiece), like a case with an overhanging lip, or a dirty screen protector.
