phone shutting down

Hi.i don't know if this has been asked before and am sorry if it has been, but for the last few days my phone started shutting down when it has around 30-40% battery left.then when i restart it it says that i have 0% left.does this mean that my battery is old and i have to get a new one?again i am sorry if this has been asked before.
