Phone stuck in recovery mode

Hello!
A friend of mine recently gave me his old Optimus S after upgrading to a newer phone, and the device is stuck in recovery mode, displaying "ClockworkMod Recovery v3.2.0.1" along the top, followed by a number of selectable options. After looking around the internet, I attempted to install a working ROM from an SD card, but when I reboot it, it returns to the recovery screen. What can I do to fix this?

Your friend installed incompatible software on the phone, probably used ROM Mangler to install the wrong recovery. Check out the ROM Manager and Unbrick threads in the Rooting, ROMs and Hacks section.

I tried out "xionia recovery", and it magically seemed to fix the phone. Thank you very much for your help!
