Hi
When my essential phone's screen is off and after a few minutes, if i want to unlock the phone using fingerprint sensor, it has no response until i wake the screen by pressing the power button first.

It doesn't work like this on pixel - even if the phone screen is off, when i press the fingerprint sensor it automatically unlocks the phone.

Is there a way this could be changed on essential?

Mine doesn't do this.. it wakes up instantly with the fine print reader. Are you on latest firmware?

yes - I've the latest firmware - leave the phone untouched for a 5-10mins and see whether it works
For me, it works if it wakes up if i touch the fingerprint reader within a min after the screen goes blank. My setting is to lock the phone after 2 mins. So after that i have to press the power button first and then the fingerprint reader

I have not seen that behavior on my phone. I am running the latest NMJ32F build.

Do you see a message at the bottom - "Too many attempts, try again later"? When that message appears, the phone disables the FP reader until the screen is woken up by pressing the power button.

Even with the too many attempts message the fp reader still wakes my phone but i need to enter pin to unlock

Correct, it will prompt for a pin if that message is displayed, but with my phone FP reader doesn't wake up the phone after too many failed attempts. I have to use the power button.

You should email Essential, they are pretty responsive with customer issues.

I'm on NMI81C build. no further updates available for me

When the screen is off, i don't get any response. I leave the phone on the desk for 5-10mis. When i pick up and try to use fingerprint scanner, no response at all until i press the power button.
So this might be an issue with this build

I don't know if it will help, but in settings>gestures>lift to check phone, make sure that's active. When I pick my phone up that just make it come to life and the fingerprint reader usually works. Hope that works for you.
