Have had my M8s for several months now.
Battery went flat overnight, charged it to about 5% and turned it on.
All I get is some kind of boot screen showing 'Software Status Modified' on the top line.
There are various options (boot, fastboot, close etc) none of which do anything but take me back to the boot screen.
I haven't recently modified any of the settings or upgraded the software.
