Phone wont connect to service provider

My ZTE phone reads the sim but will not connect a red pone appears in the signal bar at top of phone
 
Welcome to the forums. Is the device new? You may need to contact your carrier to have the phone enabled to work on their network.

This too. I forgot.

I recently encountered this issue even with att after switching from Verizon. I could receive calls and texts but no data until I registered my imei with them

AT&T made a similar claim that I would benefit from the network more, once I gave them my IMEI as well.
 
Well I did. No data vs having data
Oh, I still did. Just didn't see much of a difference.

But I do recall seeing other threads quite some time ago, where this step was needed to fully activate the phone. It's less common now as a lot of phones are compatible on most networks out of the box.
 
Well I thought it was because of the phone its self ...because my carrier is through cricket, and my phone has to be unlocked for the sim card to work...which obviously it does cause I can get calls and text but not internet (which is part of my phone plan UNLIMITED EVERYTHING.) ...Help me..
 
Welcome to Android Central! Which phone do you have? Did you get it directly from Cricket, or did you bring it from somewhere else? Is your mobile data turned on in the first place?
