I've got an odd phonebook issue, I really don't think its the phone but rather google voice. I have 2 people with the same name, both first and last name, I refer to one as Mike and the other as Michael so as to keep them separate in the phone book.

If I edit the entries online with Google voice then both entries get merged together, if I edit them on the phone then they get kept as individual entries.

Anybody see this before? any way to keep google from merging the contacts?

I do, I have one in as Mike Jones and the other as Michael Jones, but if I edit one from the google voice page it merges them automatically on the phone, if I edit them on the phone they stay as two separate phonebook entries

Not sure about the involvement of Google Voice in this problem because I don't have Google Voice. I did have the problem where Google (or Android) was merging certain contacts. When you find a contact that has been merged, do as follows to split them:
The SPLIT option is available when editing the contact you want to split.

1. Select the contact that contains the combined record of two contacts (For example, if you have two contacts named Bob Jones that have been combined into one record named Bob Jones, select that contact.)
2. Tap Menu, Edit Contact
3. Tap Menu, "SPLIT" or "SEPARATE"

This may be too late, but you could try pronouncing Michael as mi KEL or placing a number before or after the name I'm sure there's not enough sound difference between the two names for the microphone to pick it up
