Hello!
I am interested in purchasing a Nexus 4. When I buy phones, I typically have them for 2 years or more. Given that the phone is over 6 months old and I would have it for another 2 years, is it still logical to get it?

I would probably get the htc one or the S4 now. Not saying the N4 is old now but if you want the phone to last a little longer I would advise you to get the newer devices. However, if you are big on software features then you could be sure that the N4 will get the latest android updates first such as the upcoming android 4.3 or klp when it is released.

On a Nexus, yes. It's very likely it'll continue to be updated that entire time and that's a great device. There is a refresh expected at the end of the year, but it'll most likely be incremental hardware increases and the same software you'll get anyways. Because it's a glass phone, I'd strongly recommend having a case to have it last that long without any unnecessary cracks, etc. Good luck!

I've always been an every 2+yrs guy too but you might want to think this thru. Do you keep your phones for 2+yrs because your carrier makes you or because you don't want to buy a new one after a year?
Unless there's some other unknown reason, both of those things are moot with the N4. Because you don't have a contract and you'll save enough $ after a year to buy something else which by then will likely be better than anything out now.

I buy new phones after 2 years because I have T-Mobile so I pay for the phones straight-out. I'd rather take full advantage of them.

No phone out will be useless in two years. It's a subjective thing as to which phone you pick. I have the N4 and love it, but I can't say it'll please you. As I said no phone out today will be useless or that old in two years. I suggest going into a store and giving each a go. I've been playing with Android phones since November of 2009, and still have only been wowed by one phone. That was the Droid X the day I got it. Two days later it was just another Android phone.

That's a real tough one. You're right on the halfway point of this phone, as a new Nexus comes out every 12 months and the next one is due in Nov/Dec. For me, there is no better device than a Nexus, so if mine broke today, I'd order a new one right now, and sell it after I bought the N5 in Nov. If that idea doesn't work for you, the N4 will certainly run well for the next 2 years. The other option, if your current phone isn't a POS, would be to wait 6 months and get the new Nexus.

If you buy your phones new, then take into account the price difference for a new N4 versus a new Galaxy S4 or HTC one. You don't seem to be the type that NEEDS to sit on the bleeding edge of newness, so it may make sense to get the N4.

I have a problem though. I'd probably end up buying both and then being broke for a while. :-/

Need is relative. I have a Galaxy Nexus, and at 1.5 years, it feels ready to be replaced to me. Would I be super-happy to buy the one I've got at a used price if I were some other guy transitioning from a flip-phone, hell yes!
If you feel you can't wait any more, I vote for the N4 (stock Android FTW) and think you can push it out for 2 years. I could personally push my GNex out another year if I were completely broke. If you think you can make it another 6 months, wait for the next Nexus.

The nexus 4 will outlast the HTC one and the and the s4 simply due to updates

The only thing behind is the screen resolution. But with a quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM that is still on par with the newest smart phones. A 200Mhz CPU clock speed increase is really only good for showing higher bench mark numbers and you won't notice much difference in every day use.

if you want keep it for long time i suggest you purchase s4 or nexus 5.
because the application developer will adapt to recent device only.

Phone makers hype new phones. Sure new phones have the newest gimmicks, but I think it's the hype surrounding a new phone release that makes people think that their phone is becoming outdated. I'm all about the OS updates... I'll stick with my Nexus 4. OS updates will keep the phone feeling newer.

I say go for the N4. Sure the HTC One and S4 are the newest thing but they will fade fast. The S3 is less than a year old and it's now "old news" in the tech world. Basically if you only purchase a phone every 2 years you will never stay in the latest and greatest device. In my opinion that's the best part of the nexus line, as previously stated it has longevity that flagship carrier dependent phones just don't have. For the price of the N4 it can't be beat. I traded my S3 strait up for a 16gb Nexus 4 and I feel I got the better deal. Sure having the micro sd card option was nice but it's not a deal breaker. Also the N4 is an awesome device period, not just because it's a fraction of the outright price of the One or the S4. If I had to choose between the 3 I might still pick the N4. In this day and age of trading/buying/selling devices through Craigslist,Ebay etc you are never really stuck with any device. If you get tired of one just trade it:)

Nexus 4 is still a great phone and if you want to get a steady amount of OTA updates from Google then the choice us clear. I've had my Nexus 4 since launch and still love the pure Android experience over the new S4 and HTC One. Its all done to personal preference though.

If you get a Nexus don't get it through T-Mobile, they over charge for it unless they're pricing changed.

If you'll be keeping it for a while I say definitely N4. The S4 or One are better right now but in the future the N4 will get 4.3, 5.0, and other future updates while other phones may not. Nexus devices are always the most future-proof.

I was doing some more research and have become fascinated with the HTC One, mainly because of its excellent build quality and LTE support. I think that HSPA+ won't be very fast in two years, and although Magenta doesn't have LTE in my area yet, they will sometime soon. I'm also very concerned I will break the Nexus.

In two years, would having the One be like having one of the nicer low-level phones nowadays? Or would it just be some unimpressive, outdated piece of technology?

The newest phones out now are only incrementally better than the Nexus. The One has a slightly better CPU and display and a lot of people consider it's build quality the best. The S4 has a better CPU and has SD and removable battery. Both have slightly better cameras.

Unless those things matter to you, go with the Nexus. The differences are not night and day IMO. The Nexus is far more likely to see support 2 years from now. The Nexus has a great display by any standard, and a fast Quad core CPU. Best of all, it also has vanilla android.
