Phones that will Wifi with Nexus?

Check out FoxFi. No root required, and it enabled me to use my phone as a hotspot without subscribing to the feature (the built-in feature turns out on but doesn't allow data to pass through as the network recognizes it as being passed to a secondary device).

Unfortunately, for older phones, Foxfi supports a Bluetooth connection only. That's the problem that OP was asking for a solution to (since not all services on the Nexus 7 work over a Bluetooth Internet connection).

Foxfi doesn't work on it. I get the message "Wifi has failed on your phone, please use bluetooth" and " Fail to activate, Internet not detected." I'm sitting in front of my home computer right now with my N7 and my phone and that's what I get and I've tried Foxfi probably 6-8 x over the past couple of weeks and keep getting the same thing.

My phone is only about 6mos old. I realize technology keeps marching on but seriously? A 6mos old phone is to old to use Foxfi?

Root? That should give you the ability.

Not only am I technically challenged with something like rooting it's beyond ridiculous that I should have to do that with a 6mos old phone that's SUPPOSED to have the capability to do this without rooting.

The Galaxy Nexus has hotspot available stock with ICS and there are deals all over the place for it at like $99 but if your upgrade is not up yet I guess you kind of stuck unless you want to get a hotspot device.

If I have to buy a new phone the one I REALLY want is the Galaxy Note but VZW doesn't show that one so I'm assuming it's not compatible with their system. Next in line is the Galaxy GS III which but I'd have to pay full price :( minus those discounts from Samsung which I'm now seriously considering but it's crazy to have to buy a new phone to make this work when my Rezound is only 6mos old!!! Maddening to say the very least!

FoxFi supports what FoxFi supports, and it doesn't support what it doesn't support, and it's free. And, no, your phone is not too old to support FoxFi, but it's an HTC phone that is not running Ice Cream Sandwich so it won't support WIFI using FoxFi. If your phone ever gets an ICS upgrade or you switched to a Samsung, LG, or Motorola phone (even an older one), you'd be able to use WiFi. I'm in the exact same boat with my HTC Thunderbolt - it's still on Gingerbread and is therefore not WiFi capable in FoxFi.

Technically, the "correct" if unpleasant answer is "if you want tethering on your Verizon Unlimited plan, Verizon offers and has long offered tethering on Verizon Unlimited plans - cough up the dough and pay for it".

However, having said all that, and reiterating the whole "terms of service violation" thing, if you want to proceed and try to get tethering for free using free apps...

I have not tried this (since mine is a corporate-issued phone and violating the terms of service on behalf of my employer seems a very unwise career move) but there is an app called PdaNet Tablet that supposedly proxies the normally-unsupported-over-Bluetooth Internet apps and makes them work over Bluetooth.

It came up as the second search result from a search on the Play Store for FoxFi.

PS: All hope is not lost. If you can use FoxFi and the PDANet app I just mentioned to get access temporarily, the Rezound is still (as far as any pundits know) due for an eventual upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich. Once it's running ICS, it should be fully supported in WiFi mode by FoxFi.

Some outlets even state the upgrade is "imminent". So unless there's some specific reason you absolutely NEED the tethering right now, I'd hold off for a few weeks and see if Big Red puts some Ice Cream Sandwich in that Rezound.

SVTP is a nice little app that will enable you to use your device as a hotspot for free, bypassing any required feature. There's a lite version which you can download to see if it will work on your device. If it does, a one-time payment of $15 gets you all you can eat mobile hotspot. Just make sure you start your hotspot sessions thru SVTP and not through the normal hotspot widget or app.

Yessssssssss!!!!!!!! I want it now but if ICS will solve my problem you've saved me several hundred bucks in buying a new phone. Much as I really want a Galaxy Note or GSII if Note won't work on VZW I really can't afford nor justify the purchase JUST to get the wifi. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. You have given me hope where I was almost out of hope other than spending big bucks.

On the Google Play page for that app, it has the following:

NOT compatible with most HTC, EVO, Photon, Rezound, Inspire, Samsung Prevail, Motorola Triumph, Casio Commando, LG Spectrum, Motorola Bravo.

Good try, but since OP has a Rezound, unfortunately it ain't gonna work.

I will give it a try if this doesn't violate any TOS. For everyone else I did not think I was violating anything -- I'm not trying to break any rules. I thought this was an ok thing to do IF I went to VZW's new share everything plan. I just want to see if it works before I were to do this because I have unlimited right now although I do think their SE plan would save me a few bucks. I would not have a problem switching my plan IF I can get a wifi connection.

So I guess DUMMY is plastered on MY forehead. Ugh. I do appreciate the warnings/explanations, mine is not a corp phone but where I work if I were to get caught up in something like this it could mean my job even though the phone is not theirs it's mine and I don't use their service for anything ... not allowed.

The HTC Rezound requires you to short out a circuit to get S-off for rooting. So yes for her phone it is hard enough not to be considered feasible to most.

I really do not want to go the rooting route. I have had the WORST luck doing things with hardware and I'd prolly brick my phone. Murphy's Law LOVES me :(

In the meantime, you can try that second app I posted the link to and see if that gives you the "missing" services that Bluetooth doesn't allow.

Of course, with one final repeat of the disclaimer - Verizon does not want you to do this and it violates your terms of service (the contract you signed with them). They offer a paid service (which, by the way, I agree SHOULD BE FREE, but it ain't and them's the breaks) that would solve your problem.

Your phone, your plan, your choice.

All the new VZW share everything plans include HOTSPOT free within the plans framework. Your current plan with unlimited data I believe does not but it can be added.

OK, now I'm confused.

If you walk in to a Verizon store today and switch to Share Everything, TETHERING IS NOW INCLUDED FOR FREE IN THAT PLAN. You can use full-on, Verizon-supported and sanctioned tethering to hook your Nexus to your smartphone, via WiFi, no apps, no hassles, no terms of service violations.

Verizon’s Share Everything Plans: Who Saves, Who Pays More

Your phone should fully and absolutely support tethering using WiFi and Verizon's tethering plan. Even my old HTC Thunderbolt would. It's a feature of Android since very early on. The problem is that you cannot use the actual built-in tethering without your carrier knowing about it. But if you go with Share Everything, it doesn't matter if Verizon knows about it, because it's included.

Verizon doesn't want you tethering on Unlimited without paying for tethering because they're afraid you'll use more data. With Share Everything, you are on a metered plan so if you start using lots of data you'll start paying them lots of money. So they don't get all freaked out about "unauthorized tethering" because you are more than welcome to tether.
