Photo date resets to today after transferring from SD to internal storage

Hi all,
Am hoping you can help with an issue I have with Gallery app on Samsung S10 that I have been struggling for weeks.

I transferred all my videos and pictures from SD card to internal storage and while most of the files showed correct dates on when the pic was taken, some pictures (notably that was received via Whatsapp) and ALL of my videos seem to "think" that the date of the original file was the day it was transferred to the internal storage.

Is there a way to edit this info? An app perhaps that is effective for this? While it will be a cumbersome process to edit each file, I am willing to do that since there are so many files from over the years currently all jumbled to one date

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

It sounds like the the ones showing the correct date had that info stored in the EXIF data of that particular file. The files from WhatsApp are likely being received with that info removed, or perhaps never had that info to begin with (which can happen with some transfer and storage protocols). Without that info telling the gallery app when the file was originally created, it resorts to reading the creation date of that specific file.

When you moved the photos to a different physical storage location, technically what happens is a new but identical file is created, and the original is deleted (or left alone if the copy command was used instead). As far as the gallery is concerned, this is a new file created at the time of the move. It has no way of knowing that it should have a different date associated with it.

I would suggest trying this app. It has the ability to edit the EXIF data (aka metadata) when saving the files, so you can open, immediately select to save, then edit as desired from the metadata option. This can also be done as a batch process if you have multiple photos with the same date. I haven't used those specific functions before, so you may have to play around with it a bit to get things right.

If that doesn't do it, look for a 'touch' app. (Touch is a *nix command that lets you set the last modified date [or created date] of a file.) Or you can connect the phone to a computer, run adb, type

shell

then type

touch -t YYMMDDHHMM /sdcard/whatever_the_filename_is

Mooncatt solution works (albeit very manual), do you know what the equivalent app would be to edit videos metadata?

I am having the same issue with WhatsApp videos

I just did a quick test - the Samsung My Files app saves the photo date, but a third-party file manager app didn't. My suggestion going forward would be to copy (NOT move) the photos using whatever method you prefer, verify, and then delete from the original location.

There are Android apps that will let you change file date/time, but I don't use them so I couldn't recommend any of them.

Welcome to the forums. Please let us know if that helped your problem, or if we need to look at other possibilities. :)

The app works to edit photo exif and lets me organize the photos... do you know if there is an equivalent app for videos? All of my videos post transferring from SD card to internal storage are also dated as of the date of transfer vs. original date.

Thanks again!

Unfortunately I don't. Video editing isn't something I'm experienced in.
