Are there any news updates about what Motorola/Sprint are doing about the call problems on the Photon? I hear many people still having problems making/receiving phone calls and the restarts/battery pulls being ineffective. This is really the only thing preventing me from returning my Evo 3D. I really want the Photon but I am worried about this

I've had mine for a few days now and have not needed to reboot because the phone was unresponsive. Maybe you should try it and if it doesn't work out you can just swap back to the 3D. I personally love this thing compaired to the 3D!

I've found a few things with the black screen of death, 1) you can soft reboot by pressing the power, vol down, and camera buttons all at the same time and 2) if you switch the battery mode to performance I haven't had the issue since. It looks like just a software issue and if the performance mode works for now I can make it through until the OTA update comes along.

When is the OTA update coming? Also, what types of issues will this OTA update fix?

I've been having problems when I make or receive calls and there is no audio coming in or out. I can receive calls, but its blank on my end and their end, and I can also make calls but its the same situation. No noise transmitted. A reboot fixes it, but only temporarily.

My Photon has been doing this at least twice a day.... call comes in, no audio, headset, speaker or earpiece. Same thing on a lot of outgoing calls. I have to reboot to get it to have audio again. VERY frustrating, especially in my business.

I just switched the battery over to performance mode and rebooted, I'll see if that fixes it.

Okay. Please let us know how that works. As for me, I guess I will just wait another week to make my final decision. Last month I was eligible for an upgrade and I got the Evo3D. A few days later I heard about the Photon, a phone that at the time of the Evo3D purchase I had never heard of. I know that was stupid of me not to do proper research

My 30 day return for the Evo3D ends on August 12th. Hopefully by that time, there will be some kind of OTA update for this issue. It's no big deal really. I love the 3D. Both phones are great devices and the only reasons that I really wanted the Photon was because it has GSM and when the calls DO work, the quality and signal are reportedly better than the 3D.

Oh well, it's no biggie if I can't get the Photon. Let me know if Performance Mode for your battery settings work. Thanks!

Mine is doing the same thing just got my photon monday I use google voice though. The phone works and stuff then when i go to make a call nothing it goes throught he process of making the call and it says its connected but it never rings. The same happens when they try to call but on their end it rings and then goes to voice mail. There was a point or too when it didnt even connect to voicemail said the google suscriber you are trying to reach is not currently available. Going to give it a few more days and if ssame issue going to take it back to the store.

I've had the "no sound" issue on phone calls occasionally, and I've had the battery setting on Performance mode from day one. I also has a data connection problem for the first time yesterday. The browser wouldn't load pages and the phone just seemed to be churning and churning. It even got a bit warm. After a power cycle it was fine. I don't think the battery performance setting will make any difference.

I'm in the same position, I use the phone for work and I talk approx 6 to 8 hrs a day on my phone so it has to work. I switched to this phone because my epic was horrible after the last update and I have no confidence in samsung to fix their software problems. Having said that, since I switched battery modes, and removed the blur facebook stuff (installed the actual facebook app instead) I haven't had a repeat of the problem.

Now I'm just not sure if it's the battery savings mode or the social intergration that's causing the problem. I'm leaning toward the battery but the social software was hogging memory like crazy and could of been the cause of the freeze (or poor battery life) problems we've been having. So far since I uninstalled the social stuff by battery life is much better. Before the removal my battery drain averaged about 5% to 10% drain per hour with no use, now with the installation of the actual facebook app I'm only seeing about 2% to 3% drain. The third possibility is the wifi, the one thing I've noticed is every time it crashed I had wifi turned on, and I haven't had it on since I've modified everything so I'm going to try the straight 3g data for a while and see what happens, if it doesn't crash I'll try the wifi again and see it that's the culprit. I also use an airave at work so if it starts up again after the weekend I'll change my suspicions to that. I'm giving Moto a pass for now since the phone just came out and is very good when it's working right, but if the OTA update doesn't come through in the next two to three weeks I'll switch to the XPRT.

Well I can say everything is better after the steps I took, my phone has been off the charger for 15 hours now and I'm at 50% battery and it hasn't locked up once today. No dropped calls, no black screen o death, not a single problem. Hopefully I didn't just jinx myself.

My up time is now at about 30 hrs and no problems since the changes, same phone that was having problems previously, but I'm certain it's a software or wifi problem at this point. I've been in and out of my airave at work and no hangups. I'm going to give it another 24 hrs and if it's still going strong I'll start playing with the wifi and see if I can get it to freeze up.

Well small update I took off google voice and so far it has been working fine. I have not had to restart teh phone to make calls. Will try it out today and leave feedback.

I'm back to my Evo 4G. Photon is back at the store. Loved the phone and may well buy it again... when they fix the problems. Can't afford to miss calls and have texts that I can't respond to without rebooting. The company VP called today and I didn't know until I got the voicemail.

Still love the OG Evo. It may not be as sexy, but it's as reliable as they come.

The Sprint Store charged me a $35 restocking fee for returning a defective phone. I do plan to call them and "discuss" this.
