Puzzlegal,

To select a section, long-press a word and the selection arrows pop-up. See the Getting Started section on Cut, Copy, Paste, and Share for much more. I added a little more to try to make it more clear.

As to typing, please get the 30 day free trial of SwiftKey. It will save you. It is everything the Pre could do times three. Full speed, no errors.

Yea... Really miss having a comma in the main set of leys. Alsp miss the auto correct tjat added apostrophes....

SwiftKey even has a comma and don't think for a minute it can't do words with apostrophes!

It'll take some getting used to, especially the lack of a real keyboard , I have to remember to turn it horizontally to get a usable size keys or I end up having many typos...
Again, SwiftKey is the secret. Once you let it learn how you think, you will never need to use horizontal unless you want to.

Yes SwiftKey is that much better than any of the stock keyboards.

...Biggest change for me so far has been the notifications and the fact that they're so hidden...
See thePalm webOS Homebrewer's Guide to Android section on:

Apps like Executive Assistant (free) let you see and respond to individual notifications from the lock screen. In addition Executive Assistant allows you to set repeating reminders for missed calls, emails, texts, calendar events, and more. You can set customized sounds, vibrations, and LEDs for each. (Executive Assistant-No ad version, Details)

That's not exactly how it works in this phone, or at least, how I read it isn't how it works, but your instructions were close enough for me to get it. If you long-press a word, a menu pops up asking if you want to select the word, or the whole thing (or "input method" or "add *** to dictionary")

I knew that neither of those was what I wanted. BUT, if you tap "select word", the word is selected AND there's a movable handle on either side of the word that you can drag to the end points of the selection. That's enough to let me delete a block of text. If I want to cut or copy the selected text, I need to long-press the highlighted stuff. That opens a little "edit text" menu. Once I've copied something, the "long press" menu adds "paste" (and removes the "add to dictionary" option, or maybe that's because I pressed a blank spot, and not a word.)

Okay, I'll give it a try.

Notifications work very nicely in the stock Photon. There are tiny little items at the top of the screen that tell you what notifications you have. Whenever you want you can pull down the notification page. Each notification is listed, with a brief description. You can clear them all, or clear selected notifications (tap the red circle with a "-" in it) or select a notification (press and hold it) to open the relevant application. When you are done with the notification page, you just grab it's little "handle" and pull it back up to the top of the screen. It took me a while to figure the second bit out, because the "handle" is all the way at the bottom of the screen, even if there aren't very many notifications, and it's subtle. But if you look for it, it's easy enough to see. (Or, just grab the bottom of the screen.)

I downloaded the "battery status" app by Modded Logic as suggested in the battery tips thread. Works great and lots of options.

Brings up another topic. At first I was annoyed that these apps that we're using that we're patches in WebOS don't take over..Like the batter percentage doesn't change the default battery icon like on WebOS, but instead adds one to the top left where the status indicators are. Same for the weather bug one I installed last night...
It only shows percentages in tens.
The $1 version does show down to 1% and lets you see different background colors or Red, Yellow, and Green. You set where the colors change:

Battery Status (free, Upgraded $1) - Puts the real battery percentage in the Notification Bar.

It's worth the buck for a great little app to get the better features and support the developer.

You can replace the Status battery indicator on the right if you are rooted. I was rooted at first but have come around to saying, What's the point? So I am not rooted any more.

I bought the $1 version, and I'm using the tri-color indicator. And it did give me the option to set where the colors change, although the defaults seemed fine. But the indicator only shows the battery charge in multiples of 10%. I even spent some time thumbing through the options to see if I could change that. Perhaps it's possible, but I don't see how.

...Biggest gripe at this point is the drop down menu. Swipe down, menu comes done. Cool. Swipe down again......NOTHING...
Pull down the notifications like a pull-down blind by swiping down. Swipe up to pull it back up.

I will explain that better in the Notifications section of the Getting Started.

Keep your questions coming! I am using your questions to refine the wording in the Getting Started and Survival Guide. I added the terms "swipe down" and "swipe up". Is this more clear?
"When you get an email, text, or other event occurs, an LED can flash and a Notifications will appear in the Status bar at the top. Drag the Notification Status Bar down (swipe down) to see all your notifications. They will stay visible until you tap one or drag the Notifications back up (swipe up) to close it. If you don't want to look at your notifications right now, they will not take up any screen at all."

I can't find where it was, but someone recommended go contacts. I just tried it out, and I need to second that recommendation.

Hey all your Pre refugees who used to use Treos! Remember how the Treo let you search _all_ the fields of your contacts? So I could, for instance, search for all the plumbers in my address book?

Go Contacts gives me that functionality back. Alas, I've lost some of the notes I used to have on contacts, due to the various transitions from system to system. But I am very happy to have this feature back, and I will repopulate the data in due time. It also appears to restore the ability to create groups of contacts. I just started playing with it, but this app looks like a keeper.

That's right. That is a Motorola thing. The plain vanilla Android API only gives increments of 10% when you make a call to the battery API. I thought everyone else had that down to 1% but Motorola does only give the vanilla 11 levels (0%, 10%...). I forgot.

The normal Status Battery indicator only shows 5 levels that are hard for me to see. So at least this is 11 levels and is much larger and in color.

I am happy that you like the default color level changes. I picked the default when I was working with the developer to add the color change option.

That is one other thing to know about the Android world. Everyone is open to suggestions. Lay our how and why and how you want it to look and many will do it for you if you work with them.

As another example, I really love the webOS calendar icon that is secretly webOS's only widget (the number changes). The Today Widget developer had it in all black but that looks so nerdy. I wanted the red and white of the webOS calendar widget. And a couple weeks later here it was as the Pro version:

Today Widget - Day and date in a 1x1 widget. ($1 Pro version has color options)

The fact that SwiftKey has an option for 3 real predictions was my idea (set space to always be a space). I also got them to add contractions and sever other key improvements that I wanted.

I loved this feature in my Treo as well. webOS took away many of the best features like contact search and folders. It is sad how many of the Homebrew patches were just to try to restore Treo functions. **sigh**

The reference to Go Contacts is the Phone section of the Getting Started :
Smart Dial
Here are a few more of the many Applications you may want to try.
Go Contacts lets you dial a middle part of a name or number. For 202-456-1414 , you can dial "456" or "1414".
Go Contacts & TouchPal Dialer can seach contacts for "Pen" for contacts on Pennsylvania Ave or "Wash" for Washington.

As to typing notes back into contacts, I find that it is easier for me to use the gmail.com interface where I can cut and paste addresses. Or if you still have them somewhere you can import them.

Yeah, pretty sure that was your rec, and I even spent a few minutes looking for it, but gave up. ;)

Hey, so I bought Swiftkey, and I seem to have botched the installation (by not pressing "back" immediately after choosing it in the options.) Am I stuck? Do you have any idea what I can do?

OK, that;s another plain vanilla Android thing. How does this sound for the Cut, Copy, Paste, and Share:

Cut and Paste While Typing
You can easily move text around while you are typing. On some phones, you many need to Tap Menu for Cut and Paste options. If you have a phone with a physical keyboard, you may need to press and hold Shift while you swipe you finger over the content to copy.
• Double Tap or Long-press to select a Word.
• To select more content: Drag the selection points to enclose the content you want.

...When you are done with the notification page, you just grab it's little "handle" and pull it back up to the top of the screen. It took me a while to figure the second bit out, because the "handle" is all the way at the bottom of the screen, even if there aren't very many notifications, and it's subtle...
Under Notifications, I have refined the verbiage.
When you get an email, text, or other event occurs, an LED can flash and a Notifications will appear in the Status bar at the top. Drag the Notification Status Bar down from the top (swipe down) to see them all. They will stay visible until you tap one or drag the Notifications back up from the bottom (swipe up) to close it. If you don't want to look at your notifications right now, they will not take up any screen at all.

Does that make it more understandable?

By the way, thanks to everyone for your feedback. I have been working on the Tips and Tricks and Android (and webOS) for so long, it is almost impossible to catch these things. The best way to check instructions is with someone new. You forget how much you take for granted.
