Photon Support Group For Palm webOS Users

...In particular I miss cards
...I also miss the email interface...I just want to see all my emails one place
...keyboard replacements...guess wrong
...I like the photon.
Erin,

Welcome to Android Central. I also did the webOS Getting Started threads a couple years ago because people were having such a hard time finding everything in webOS.

From the Palm webOS Homebrewer's Guide to Android

Cards
If you miss cards, try
Perfect Task Switcher, Visual Task Switcher, Wave Launcher, Itching Thumb or launchers like LauncherPro.

Email
K-9 Mail puts all of your accounts into one place, with one Notification and the in boxes you want. It's free.

Keyboards
SwiftKey takes a few days to learn how you think. From the Getting Started section on Keyboards, here are some key settings:
SwiftKey Settings
Tap Home > Menu > Settings > Language & keyboard > SwiftKey X
? Advanced > Spacebar will...: "Always insert a space" gives 3 real predictions. Warning: Defaults to Insert a prediction.
? Advanced > Keyboard feedback: To customize keypress vibrations.
? Advanced > Quick ".": If on, press space twice to get a period. You probably want this off.
? Theme > Theme: To select Light, Dark, or Neon Theme.
? Theme > Arrow keys: To add arrow keys to the keyboard.

If you are liking the Photon (or whatever Phone), Vote for Sprint's best Android phone,

Erin, keep asking these great questions!

I just posted this review over on the Sprint forum for my Photon 4G, but dont really expect any answers to my problems there. This is probably a better place for these issues so I am reposting here and would love to see if anyone has any idea's about how I can get over these issues and start trying to love Android like everyone else seems to...

It was time to replace my Palm Pre and Sprint stopped carrying Palm/HP devices except the two year old Pixi, so it appeared to me that this phone was the best choice, especially given its emphasis as a business phone. The phone itself seems to be put together pretty well, its light and feels good in the hand. I needed to make sure the phone I got had a notification light so that when new emails or texts came in, I would be notified. This was one of the few Android phones that has a notification light without resorting to something downloaded from the Android market that makes the camera flash to notify you. I had seen mixed reviews on those and did not want to chance it that it would not work. The problem is the notification light is so small you really have to squint to see it when its flashing, so this turned out to be a disappointment. I have 1 corporate exchange email account, 2 gmail accounts, 1 yahoo account, and 1 home email account so I wanted to make sure the phone had something similar to the Universal inbox I had with my Palm Pre. It claims it does, and they are mostly right, except that for some reason on an Android phone, the Gmail account has to be kept separate!!! Emails sent to the Gmail account will not show up in your "Universal Inbox" and to further confuse you, you can?t even place the gmail account icon inside the Messaging icon on your home screen so checking emails requires multiple taps and navigation to make sure you are up to date on all your emails. I am not allowed to forward corporate emails to a gmail account, so while I have had that suggested to me that I just forward everything to gmail, it is really not an option. At least you get notifications in one place, that is a good start, but this is a far cry from what my two year old Palm Pre could do or my wife's Blackberry. And to add insult to injury, this business phone will not allow you to accept meeting invitations sent from a corporate exchange account. Apparently this is a known limitation with Motorola and Android (or maybe just Android in general). I have been told I can go and download a $20 app to do this, but then what point is my Universal Inbox? Also, I use folders on my corporate exchange account to file away important information. The problem is that you can only choose from default sync amounts of 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, 14 days, or 30 days. Most of the stuff I file away (in a how to folder for example) is more than 30 days old. There is no way to set it to get all the email in my corporate exchange folder past 30 days. So I am therefore unable to read any of those important emails. Again, not a problem on my Palm Pre.

The calendar app has also tripped me up a few times. It does sync the calendar on all my accounts, but it has this odd behavior of showing you the last date you looked at whenever you open it up. More than once I have opened it up and looked over my appointments for the day only to discover I was looking at the wrong date. The behavior I am used to is when you open up the calendar app, it shows you today, not yesterday, or tomorrow. I think I can attribute this to user error (my problem) but it does seem un-natural to me. One of the things I miss about the Palm Pre was that the calendar icon on the home screen always showed me todays date. This was so handy when filling out paperwork. The one on this phone always says ?31?. I can go download some widgets to personalize this to my heart?s content I suppose, but I am really trying to limit how much I install given all the attention paid to having to get a task killer and other apps to manage your phone and battery life. I was also shocked to see the Help Center topic on Performance recommended that I reboot my phone every day. I rebooted my Palm Pre maybe 10 times the whole 2.5 years I had it. Why do I need to reboot my phone every day? This phone (and I think really Android in general) kind of take over your life, requiring constant attention and extra taps to get everything done. I have plenty of other things to focus on, I needed a phone that helps me get things done so I can focus on my job and family, not my phone.

I also have had several issues with the Bluetooth, wifi, and 4g connection. I have a Motorola T505 Bluetooth receiver in my car. It pairs just fine, but when I leave the car, go in to pick up my kids at the daycare, and then come back out again, it refuses to pair back up automatically. I have to take the phone out of my pocket, turn the Bluetooth off and then back on again. I find myself having to fiddle with this phone constantly. I never had to do this with the Palm Pre, it just worked. I seem to have a similar issue with wifi. When I am in the office, I have the phone using the wifi. If I go next door to go to the gym and step out of wifi range, but not far enough out of range, it reports connection errors but refuses to switch over to 3G/4G. If I go a lot farther away and wait 5 minutes, this problem goes away, but not before getting a notification that there was a problem connecting. There is strong 3G signal everywhere I operate, so I know it?s not a signal strength issue with 3G. I have found that I have to just turn off Wifi and Bluetooth to reliably receive my emails. This seems crazy to me given the great wifi speeds I can get in the office and I am pretty sure Sprint would rather I use Wifi for all my emails instead of their 3G network.

I am also a frustrated convert from the Pre.
I have 1 corporate exchange email account, 2 gmail accounts, 1 yahoo account, and 1 home email account so I wanted to make sure the phone had something similar to the Universal inbox I had with my Palm Pre.
Try K9. It is free, and it seems to be an excellent email client. While there are things about it that frustrate me, there are also things that are better than the Pre's email client. Anyhow, it has a universal inbox, and it is currently working fine with my gmail account and two personal POP3 accounts.

And to add insult to injury, this business phone will not allow you to accept meeting invitations sent from a corporate exchange account.
dunno anything about that. I don't mix my personal and business accounts. K9 says that it works with exchange, but is a little flaky. I think everything but the Blakberry is a little flaky when dealing with corporate exchange stuff.

Interesting. That was one problem I had on the Pre -- there was no way to keep old mail around without either diligently deleting everything else or completely blowing out my memory. I guess if I'd created an IMAP folder for stuff I wanted to keep it might have worked.

Anyhow, please let me know how you did this, because if it's something I can reproduce I might be tempted to go back to the Pre.

The calendar app has also tripped me up a few times. It does sync the calendar on all my accounts, but it has this odd behavior of showing you the last date you looked at whenever you open it up.
I've had the same problem -- several times. I wonder if there's a setting to fix that? I agree that it's unnatural and confusing.

One of the things I miss about the Palm Pre was that the calendar icon on the home screen always showed me todays date.
agreed.
I am really trying to limit how much I install given all the attention paid to having to get a task killer and other apps to manage your phone and battery life.
I had the 2600 fat battery on the Pre, and miss it, but I am getting better battery life with the Photon than I got with the stock Pre battery, for what it's worth.

I was also shocked to see the Help Center topic on Performance recommended that I reboot my phone every day. I rebooted my Palm Pre maybe 10 times the whole 2.5 years I had it.
Seriously?!!? I had to reboot my Pre almost every day, and sometimes twice in a day. That's one of the reasons I gave up on it and bought the Photon. I have only rebooted it once or twice, and haven't noticed any problems that would lead me to want to reboot it. I got "too many cards" errors all the time, followed by glacially slow performance after I threw away a few cards. I suspect my problem was too much email, chewing up space and other resources, but I suppose it's possible one of my games had a memory leak or something.

I just posted this review over on the Sprint forum for my Photon 4G, but dont really expect any answers to my problems there.
I will try to distill all of this down but I don't find any questions. Are these your questions you wanted to ask?
1. Is this one of the few Android phones that has a notification light?
2. How can I get a Universal inbox for corporate and personal email?
3. How do I change the default Calendar View?
4. Is there a 1x1 Calendar widget with day and date like the Pre had?
5. How do I get tech support for the Motorola T505 Bluetooth receiver?
6. How do I force WiFi On and Off based on location?
1. No. Only the Nexus S is missing a notifdication light.

2. For corporate email, see the Getting Started section on Email:
"Corporate users: check out Exchange Touchdown Trial (Full $20) or RoadSync Trial (Full $10)."

3 & 4. Set calendar default to Month View and get Today Widget. I added this Getting Started section on Setup:
Calendar Settings
Today Widget - Day and date in a 1x1 widget. ($1 Pro version has color options)
• Set to Month View: Tap Menu > More > Settings . Calendar view Settings > Start in > Month
5. Call Motorola tech support for T505 Bluetooth receiver pairing issues.

6. Juice Defender turns your WiFi On and Off automatically to save battery depending upon location. See the Getting Started section on Extend Your Battery - Speed Up Your Phone
JuiceDefender
The free JuiceDefender app saves your battery by automatically turning off radios when not in use but it is limited. Juice Defender Ultimate is well worth the $7 adding many key features as explained by Android Central...

Milominderbinder,

Is there a way to set the calendar to always open to a current view? (Today, or this week, or this month?)

Is there a way to put today's date in the notification bar, like the battery indicator or the time?

Thanks.

Thanks for your replys, I guess I can look into all of these tweaks, I do still wonder if the email client you mentioned will work as a single universal inbox, inuding threaded gmail. I think my problem (and I am ready to admit this might be just my problem) is that I expected this phone to handle email, texting, and calendering out of the box. It is now very clear to me why Android is not a great threat to Blackberry or iPhone in a corporate environment. Is a system admin supposed to pick and choose all these third party apps for a user and live with whatever fallout there might be. While I am happy that I can download lots of apps, I dont necessarily trust them all to do the right thing. Once I load my phone up with lots of apps, If tbe battery life goes into the toilet or the phone locks up or crashes (my Photon has locked up once in 7 days) then it becomes harder and harder to determine what to blame this on. Is it the phone out of the box or some aftermarket software. I will not be contacting moto about my wifi and bluetooth. I simply need something that works, I cant spend a bunch of time on the phone.

Again, I appreciate the suggestions.

Thanks

There are 200 million Android uses all with different needs. The magic of Android is that almost no matter how uniques your needs are to you, there's an app for that.

The basic phone software works for probably 90% of users. Many will never download a single app. Most like their stock email app and do not want the other features. It appears that about 100,000 have needs like yours and have downloaded apps for that.

You said that no one would answer your questions but I could not find that you asked any. We tried to figure out what questions you were asking and gave answers that have worked for many. None of the apps or widgets we are suggesting will ruin your phone or destroy you battery or hurt you in any way. There is nothing here to be afraid of.

Why not just use the Getting Started?
The free trial for Exchange Touchdown Trial (Full $20) or RoadSync Trial (Full $10) is...free. Please just try either of them.
Try the Today Widget.
Set your calendar to default to month view.
Call Motorola tech support for T505 Bluetooth receiver pairing issues. Download JuiceDefender.

Why not pick just one thing to try like the Today Widget to see for yourself whether we are not trying to hurt you?

Set your calendar to default to month view.
I have done this, but if the last thing I looked at was a date a year in the future, the next time I open it I see next August, not this August, and it's quite confusing. If there's some way to force it to open to this month, or this week, or today, I would appreciate knowing how to do that.

(I do like the calendar display, when it's displaying the right thing. It has just enough information to make everything easy to read.)

Ouch. That is something unique to Motorblur then. At least in month view, you have a better chance of seeing Today.

Have you tried one of the after-market calendars? I have never researched them because I have not seen this come up before.

I have not tried aftermarket calendars. Other than this one peculiar "feature", I like the stock calendar very much -- it's one of the few apps that's really better than the same app on the Pre (even if the Pre worked as smoothly as this.) It shows all the info that fits legibly, it is attractive, it scrolls smoothly, it isn't burdened with a lot of extra "stuff". It's almost perfect, in fact. Oh, and it's pretty easy to enter new appointments and things, too. (I've heard some discontent over inviting other people or something, but I don't do that in my personal life, only at work, and this is a personal gadget for me.)

It's true that the "user control" is problematic in some corporate environments, but I see that as a strength of this platform, not a weakness. This is my phone, not my employer's, and I am happy to be able to customize it to work for me.

If you stick to popular apps that are used by many people -- both sophisticated users and people who just want stuff to work -- there is very little danger to trying new apps. Yes, there's stuff out there that might freeze up your phone. But it isn't recommended by helpful experts like Milo. There are lots and lots of high quality apps, and one of the joys of a forum like this is that other people have already found a lot of great apps that can help you use the phone the way you want to.

There's a bult-in utility that tells you what is consuming power, by the way. So if you are worried that some app might be chewing up your battery life, you can keep an eye on it. In general, the things that eat battery life are things that either turn on the screen or talk to the outside world (use the data radios), and you usually have a decent sense of which apps will do that.

So, debating between keeping the Photon and trying to get a Franken Pre 2. Here are the advantages and disadvantages I see to both right now:

Photon advantages/Pre disadvantages:
* Photon has fast response, boots fast, recognizes when I touch the screen. The Pre takes forever to boot up, and I have to reboot it a lot as it often runs into "too many cards". It also bogs down and gets very slow to notice that I've tapped it.
* Photon email gives me feedback as to whether it is working, and except when I have been out of radio range, it has worked very reliably. Pre sometimes says "connection error", but sometimes it just doesn't download stuff for no reason I can discern.
* Pre ring tone is so quiet I often miss it. My husband complains about my "one way phone".
* The Photon has a beautiful large screen
* I can use Netflix on the Photon. And it's super easy to use the built-in navigation to get to a friend's house, or to any other place in my contact list, either from "here" or from any other place in my contact list.
* Photon calendar app loads quickly and the week view shows what each appointment is. Pre calendar loads glacially slowly and I need to look at a specific day to see its items in detail.
* Photon uses a popular operating system that is still under development, and for which 3rd party apps are constantly developed. Pre . . . alas, no and no.

Photon disadvantages/Pre Advantages:
* Pre has a decent keyboard. I am slowly getting used to Swype, but I miss my keyboard.
* Pre alerts are a little more informative, and go away by themselves when they are no longer relevant. For instance, after checking my email on the Photon I still have to go and manually clear out the alert re new mail. The Pre knows that I've checked my mail and does that for me.
* Photon often fails to make or receive sound when there's a phone call. I need to reboot it to reactivate a useful phone.
* The extended life battery on the Pre easily lasts all day with heavy useage. The Photon's battery is good for perhaps 10-12 hours with my normal useage, less with heavy useage, and I will have to manage its power every day.
* The Pre fits easily in my pockets, and the screen is large enough for almost everything I've ever wanted to do.
* I can use Facebook on the Pre without worrying about Facebook automatically reporting my location to the world, or just about Facebook knowing where I am all day long. In general, permissions to apps work much better on the Pre. I'm also less worried about HP "spying" on my than Google. HP isn't in the business of selling user data, and is unlikely to enter that business in the foreseeable future.
* I can set the Pre's calendar to open to this week. Photon's calendar oddly opens to the last date I looked at, which often confuses me.
* "Just type"works beautifully for a large fraction of what I want to do. Despite the Pre's slow response time, I routinely beat friends with Androids and iPhones at looking up random stuff on the web because of "just type". It's good for calling friends and sending emails to friends, too.
* In general, the interface of stuff on the Pre is better thought out, especially once you tweak it. Want to start a new email? Send this email? Delete this email you've just read? Delete this email that has just arrive in your inbox? A single quick touch or gesture will do any of those. All of those take at least two actions or a "long" action on the Photon. Lots of other annoying extra clicks, too.
* I can find the options I want to set in the Pre. Want to authorize a new wifi server? touch the wifi symbol and the interface is right there. I can't seem to figure out how to open that dialog on the Photon, except when there's an alert "wifi available". That's an annoying alert as it keep popping up if I don't use the wifi, by the way.
(And if there's a way to de-authorize a wifi server, I can't figure it out. That's something I often did with the Pre. I might sometimes use wifi at an airport if there happened to be a good free offer, but if there wasn't, the phone data worked more smoothly if it wasn't trying to check wifi, so I would turn that off again. If anyone knows how to do this on the Photon, please let me know.)

I may come back and add to this. I'm sure I've left stuff out. Right now I am leaning towards going with "works reliably if in a slightly clunky way, and spies on me" over "beautiful interface when it works".

Thanks Puzzlegal.
Seriously! I come here to glean the learnings of more adventurous and experienced folks, like you, so I can download useful stuff without worrying about it. Not that I've never downloaded an unknown app, but I like to hear real user comments from people I can ask questions of for important stuff, or major system-y stuff. So Thanks!

i dont think boot time is so much better on photon. There are just more animations. They will trick you everything into thinking its faster. That is no reason to pick one over the other. Voice to text email etc. Is amazing.

Boot time on the Pre is extraordinarily slow. Maybe 5 minutes as compared to about 1 on the Photon? The Photon may boot about as fast as other Android phones, but in that stat, it blows away the Pre.

Haven't tried voice to text yet. I mostly use email at home (where I have a real computer with a real keyboard) or in places where I can't really talk to my phone, like the commuter rail, or my cubical at work, or airplanes. So the opportunity hasn't come up. I am curious to try out the voice activated stuff for navigation or other stuff I might do in the car, but I have to play with that at home, first, and haven't had a chance to try it.

The google navigation seems really good, except for being a massive power hog. Much better than Sprint navigation, and better integrated with the rest of the system. I have a car charger somewhere, and will pull it out next time I try navigating.

Puzzlegal, I definitely prefer WebOS to Android 100 to 1 but the hardware and app development can't compete on any level. If I could load WebOS on the Photon or 3VO, it would be done INSTANTLY!!!

Like you, I love how it was easy to delete an email on the Pre right from the notification without even having to open it or read it. I also LOVED how I did not have to clear the new email notification after I just checked my email. The Pre already "knew" to clear it automatically.

Can someone out there just port WebOS to Android and make a dual boot system or at least make Android "patches" that would incorporate the best of WebOS? :p

I would like a true side by side test

Okay, I just did that. I put the two phones side by side, and restarted both. For the Photon, I powered it down and then held the power button to power it up. For the Pre, I held the power button until I got to the screen that gave me options and selected "reboot". I did both of these (hit "reboot" and "power on") at almost the same time.

The Photon took a minute and 5 seconds to look like it was up, and a little longer before it had restarted all its services and such. It was up and showing me new email in a minute and 25 seconds.

The Pre took a couple of seconds to go dark, and then after a bit the "Palm" logo came up. At 1:25 (when the Photon was completely back) the Palm logo started doing the glow/blur/pulse thing it does while it is booting up. At 3 minutes and 30 seconds it was up. Of course, it didn't have any services to restart, as it is in airplane mode and hasn't talked to the outside world in a while.

The Photon took about as long to reboot as I expected, the Pre felt speedy, and I wonder if it rebooted faster than normal as there is less in its memory than usual. (Email should be dropping out, and hasn't been added.) Either way, the Photon was a lot faster to reboot.

thanks puzzlegal. My point is that the pres boot time while bad, is not as bad as people think. Palm should have put animations in there instead of that monotenous palm sign. If there animations like the photon or have it boot up even though it is not ready like the photon, there would be less complaints.
