I try to never use the flash if I can help it and I shoot in 4:3 and crop if needed.

Well I often use a flash outside (during the daylight) with my real camera. It fills in shadows. But I don't think the flash on the phone is strong enough for that unless you were pretty close. Try it in a few scenarios and see what you think.
