I had to replace my phone under warranty. My old phone (also 6P) always asked me for a pin or a pattern on boot up.
When I finished setting up the new phone, I noticed that the new phone does not ask my for to unlock when it boots up.

I can't find any option in the settings that enables this function. Any idea what's going on?

Never mind..
the option to add screen lock at boot up is only available when you choose to lock your unlocked phone.
You do not get to choose this option if you add a locking option (in my case, pattern) as part of the initial setup.
At setup time, all you are asked is to choose a form of locking and set it.

What I had to do is to remove the locking altogether and then choose to lock it again with a pattern, and at that time I could see the option to lock the phone at boot up. BTW, if you remove the locking option on your phone, your saved fingerprints are erased..

You may ask why would one want this additional annoying step. Mostly for privacy.
A federal judge recently decided that unlike a password, a finger print is something the police can make you give up. That means that if any law enforcement agency wants to look at your phone, they can force you to unlock it with your fingerprint, but you are not obligated to disclose your pin or password (or patter).,
If the phone boots up directly in to your account you will have to unlock the phone with your fingerprint. If you phone asks for a pin/password/pattern, you can refuse you give it to them..

When the phone boots up and asks for a pattern, the fingerprint unlocking does not work, until you unlock it first with your pattern and the OS and account are fully loaded.
