Pinterest app ran up 3 GB in background

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4. In one day, maybe overnight, my Pinterest app used almost 3 GB of data running in the background. Any thoughts?

My thoughts are: to find out how and why it happened; to report it to the app developer; to report it to Google; to verify that it's a genuine version of the app; to set up a mobile data limit on the phone which would prevent things like that happening again.
