Interesting...I have the AVIC-8100NEX head unit and didn't know that there is a known issue with these units and Android Auto. If you have AVICSYNC enabled, it could be causing you some trouble. From the Android Auto known issues page:

These Pioneer head unit models might experience issues running Android Auto:

AVIC-8200NEX
AVIC-8100NEX
AVIC-7200NEX
AVIC-7100NEX
Pioneer is working to resolve this issue. In the meantime, follow the steps to turn off AVICSYNC connected navigation on the Pioneer website to restore Android Auto functionality.

Did you get anywhere with this? I have the same issue with the 8200 and the Pixel phone. I tried with and without Avicsync, tried various cables, tried to launch Android Auto manually, etc but to no avail. I just switched from iPhone and Apple Car Play worked perfectly. Even more frustrating, I can see my phone appear as a USB device in the Avicsync. Really frustrating!

My daughter used our car with her iPhone/CarPlay on the AVIC 8100 and the next time I tried to use Android it wouldn't work, even after I went into the settings to tell it to use USB2 for Android Auto. I had to use the reset button on the head unit but once I did Android Auto worked again.

I spoke to Google this morning and there is an issue with the Pioneer 7000 and 8000 units. Pioneer is supposedly working on a firmware update.
I tried the reset before. It did not work.

Latest update. Pioneer is supposedly going to put out an update in... February next year. Totally ridiculous but at least it seems that they are addressing the issue.
