Pixel 2 Camera is phenomenal

Re: Pixel 2 Camera is phenominal

My friends consistently have the opposite reaction.
So which one do they like? From which one of your phones? What phones do you have? Are they iPhone users?

Re: Pixel 2 Camera is phenominal

When I see the photos that some people find under-saturated or lacking in contrast from the Pixels, I wonder if the photos are actually the more accurate ones. Kinda like how most people will tend to like bigger bass and louder treble on their phones while audiophile would go for a flatter or mid-centric sound.

These photos for example from DXOMark:

To me the iPhone image pops out more but the Pixel's image is closer to what I would expect how things would look in the real world.

For me, I would prefer a more accurate color representation rather than an over-saturated one. Should I find the need to make a photo pop, I can always do it later with some very basic editing. Making a photo pop more is easier than correcting inaccurate color reproduction.

Pleasure is subjective

Which is more accurate?

Unless you were physically present to witness the colour and lighting conditions when the photo was taken there's no way for us to judge the colour accuracy based on just photo samples alone. You have to take the reviewers word for it, or use the camera in question yourself and judge from there how you like it or not. Reviews can only help you so much.

Neither.... impossible to tell. The 5 Dollar bills are way off but we don't know if it's real money in the picture but or picture of a picture.

How can you say it's impossible to tell? The detail in the scale that goes diagonally across the $5 bill is much better in the Pixel 2 pic. The details in the $5 bill itself are much better on the Pixel 2 pic.

You may not know what the colors look like in situ, but it's clear that the Pixel 2 pic is much better.

You’re looking at sharpness. We are talking about colour accuracy in a photo. I agree though the Pixel’s image looks sharper in the example you posted.

So after looking at a lot of picture and video comparisons on YouTube reviews, it does look like Pixel 2 has a cooler tone compared to both iPhone 8 and S8. I actually prefer more punchy colors that iPhone 8 is producing this year, funny it is usually the opposite. However on white color you can clearly see Pixel is more accurate while others have yellowish hue. Low light the Pixel 2 appears to have everyone else beat. If I remember correctly, this is similar result as last year when Pixel came out.

There is a video comparisons between Pixel 2 and V30, and the V30 looks terrible which is surprising to me. I am actually quite impressed with Note 8 camera shots which I think is excellent to my eyes.

Do you have a source for those? Or do you have an Pixel 2 and 8+ and took those yourself?

They're from the DXO link on first page of this thread. It also compared the Note 8, which to me looked somewhere in the middle of those two.

We are talking about all aspects of the camera, some are focusing more on color accuracy. The scale I referred to is a good color reference, in which pic does it look closer to white?

One thing I noticed about the picture of the lady in the white blouse in the restaurant is that when I zoom in on the picture (on my S8+ Samsung browser) I see that the Pixel's photo retains the details of her skin and eyes and so forth better than the iPhone pic did. In the iPhone pic an equal amount of zooming in reveals the slight painting effect I am used to seeing on iPhone pictures in indoor lighting situations. I am looking forward to getting my "Panda" and seeing if I can take pictures that retain detail that I am used to losing on indoor pictures as a long time iPhone user. However I have enjoyed the color accuracy my 7 Plus has given me over the past year.

Well, DXOMark.com is a reasonably disinterested 3rd party, and they make their business grading the performance of cameras.

They gave the Pixel 2 a color accuracy grade of 86 for color photos and a grade of 83 for color videos. The grades they gave the iPhone 8+ are 78 for color photos and 87 for color videos.

So the iPhone 8+ could claim a slight edge in color accuracy in videos, but that's a pretty large gap in the Pixel 2's favor when it comes to color accuracy in color photos.

If you prefer your photos to be on the warmer side then the iPhone might be a better choice, but it should be noted that the warmth you are experiencing is in fact a deviation from accurate color rendering.

Re: Pixel 2 Camera is phenominal

If the camera software is going to be available on any Android device

Did that happen with the original Pixel's camera? No.

Google named their phone the Pixel. Clearly, they want the camera on their phone to be special.

Re: Pixel 2 Camera is phenominal

Best to wait for some photos from real people rather than Google sponsored. It is hard to believe that this camera can match the dual camera option newer flagships are using.

If it loads fast, takes pictures instantly, saves them instantly, focuses fast on what I want it to focus on, and does decent low light I'll be happy. Tired of my current clunky phone camera.
Quick low light pics are all I care about.

Current Pixel reliably takes rapid photos instantly without lag. I see no reason to worry since Pixel 2 has upgraded processing power. The HDR+ processing takes place in the background after you snap, and you can snap away without concern.

Ported out by developers but not reliable. For a phone camera, it is basically useless.

Right. So it's not something that Google themselves did and it's very clearly not something they're planning on doing based on what we've seen and know to this point.

If I wanted to do a comparison, I would take the photo with an 18% gray scale. Then I would do a side by side with native photo and a color corrected photo (using the gray scale). They will tell me how "true" the native camera image is.

Silly me, I just took a fiver out of my pocket and held it up by my computer screen. ;) I'm pretty sure the Pixel 2 camera will just fine for my needs, not being a photo-oligist.
