Pixel 2 Can't Connect To Ford Sync 3 - 2017 Ford Edge

Just got a Ford Edge. 2017. I can't get either of my Android phones to connect with Android Auto - neither my Pixel 2 nor my wife's Galaxy S9.

I went onto the owner site for Ford and found a link for compatible phones. There are a total of 7 phones on their list. No Google phones. 2 Samsung phones (and not the ones you'd think), 1 Motorola phone, 3 older LG models, and one HTC model.

This can't be right, can it?

This is really strange that you are having this problem. I just got a 2018 Ford Fusion Hybrid and I'm not having any problems connecting with my Pixel 2. Have you connected your truck to WiFi and confirmed you have the most up to date OS for your SYNC system?

I did connect to WiFi yesterday. I clicked the button to update software, and nothing seems to happen. I let it sit for about 20 minutes while I was doing some other stuff before I turned it off. I did a manual check. It's version 2.2. So I know I can update to 3.0, which I will do tomorrow. I need to get my USB drive. The owners' site says you need one with 32GB free, but I saw on another thread that you don't need one that big. So I'll give it a try. But can that really be the issue?

I'll run out to my car and see what version I'm on. I think it's like 3.3...stand by. And yes I'm sure it would.ake a big difference.

I just forced a scan for OS updates to SYNC and there were none; 2.3 is the most current. I double checked and Android Auto works like a charm including the Google Assistant when you hit the steering wheel button. Have you made sure and installed and enabled the Android Auto app on your phone? Also, you do know that it only works when you connect via USB cord, not Bluetooth?

When I checked my software upgrade version on the Ford owner site, it says to upgrade to v 3.0. There are also threads on this site discussing it.

Weird that the forced update scan says differently - I need to investigate.... Also check that you have the Android Auto slider set to "on" under the menus on SYNC.

Try signing in to the Ford owner site and see what it tells you about your updates. And I have done the slider. With my wife's S6, it has tried to load Android Auto, but only for a second, and then it disappears.

Indeed you are absolutely correct- there is an update to 3.0. I'm downloading and installing it now.

Your problem is probably because you are currently using OS 2.2, but I'm not sure. I'd upgrade to 3.0 and try after that. I will report back when I get to 3.0 and let you know what happens.

So...funny thing, and annoying. I went out this morning and plugged my Pixel 2 in. Android Auto connected. What the? So I thought...hmmm...maybe the SYNC 3 updated over wifi when I got home last night. I checked the version...NOPE. Weird. I don't get it. I'm still going to do the update, but I'm triple confused.

That is incredibly weird, but I've had that problem too once in awhile. I'd have to unplug and plug it in again and it finally connects.

Yes you should do the update. I did it this morning and it was much quicker than the 30 minutes they estimate it would take. I believe it fixed the issue above because I tried to connect to Android Auto two times now and it does it almost instantly - normally it takes about 15 seconds for Android Auto to appear. In addition, beyond the improved connection using Android Auto, streaming music apps like Pandora connect nearly instantaneously (going directly to them via SYNC, not through Android Auto). It's almost as quick as changing the source from FM to AM, etc.

So I updated to 3.0 tonight. Went fine. My Pixel 2 is still working. The S6 is still not working. I get the message "Your device requires too much power. Please disconnect". Ordered an S9 for her. Will be here tomorrow. Maybe that will work.
