Pixel 2 XL Fingerprint Scanner Not Working

So I've had my Pixel 2XL for 2 weeks and I have loved using it from the start. However recently my fingerprint scanner has not been working properly. At first I thought oh I've got dirty hands. Would clean and still wouldn't work. Then I showered. Still wouldn't work. I then decided to see if I could add another finger in my settings and it wouldn't even register adding a new fingerprint on there. It's as though the fingerprint reader won't even work at all. Has anyone else had this issue?

re:

My FPS works amazingly well. It sounds like your's is defective. Time to contact Google to get a new phone.

re:

Have you tried registering other fingers? If so, it's possible the scanner is broken. I rock climb so my finger tips are frequently rough or calloused, but generally I don't have issues unlocking my phone with my fingerprint

Yeah.. could just be a matter of a defective part. I've had to return other phones.. two G6s and an S7, due to wonky fps sensors. It's a mass produced product, these things happen.

I've had similar issues with my Pixel 2. Non XL. My scanner will work great for a week or so and then all of a sudden it will stop working only for apps. It will work perfectly for unlocking the phone but will not read to sign into PayPal, Credit Karma, my bank app, etc..... Started doing it last night so I cleared the individual app caches(don't know if that helped for sure) and added the same fingerprint again. So now the same fingerprint is registered twice. After that it started working again. It's as if the fingerprint gets corrupted in the app somehow...? It's done this 3 times since I got the phone. Next time I'll contact Google and see what they have to say. Unless someone has any other suggestions as to what to try that will correct it for good.

I am having the same issue. The fingerprint scanner works great for unlocking the phone, but not with third party apps (PayPal, Venmo, etc.) I just talked to Google and they said to clear the cache and data of the Google play store and download manager. I'm not sure that has anything to do with it, but it's worth a shot.

Last week I accidentally cleared the Google Services Framework because I was trying to get the Nov. update, but I didn't have the issues then. It happened a little while after I factory reset my phone. Which doesn't make any sense to me. I would have thought a factory reset would fix any issues, not cause new ones.

Are any of you guys with FPS issues running the Android 8.1 beta?

I had issues similar to those described above while on the 8.1 beta; I finally reverted to "stock" 8.0.0 and the problems with FPS disappeared.

No Beta here. Still on 8.0.0 / unlocked Pixel 2 / Verizon. I haven't had the issue anymore since the last time I posted on here about it. Been perfect since.

Did you find a solution to this? Specifically not working for third party app isasue. Having same problem

I cleared the app caches that were causing problems and added the same fingerprint to my Pixel 2 for a second time. So I have the same fingerprint registered twice. Not sure if this was all necessary but it has been working fine since doing so.

Hey folks - had the same problem and contacted Fi support. Here is the email they sent me to troubleshoot the fingerprint sensor. Hope it helps!

1. Remove all previously enrolled fingerprints:

Go to Settings > Security & location > Pixel Imprint and enter your PIN / passcode.
Next to all enrolled fingerprints, tap Delete .

2. Add a new fingerprint:

- Go to Settings > Security & location > Pixel Imprint and enter your PIN / passcode.
- Tap Add fingerprint, then follow the prompts to scan your fingerprint.
- Note: When you scan your fingerprint, hold your phone in the same way you would hold it when you're unlocking your phone. For example, hold your phone with the screen facing you.
- Repeat steps a-b to add more fingerprints.

3. Improve fingerprint recognition (this worked for me):

- Go to Settings > Security & location > Pixel Imprint and enter your PIN / passcode.
- For each enrolled fingerprint, touch the fingerprint sensor with that finger 20 times, shifting your finger slightly each time. This will improve your device's ability to recognize your fingerprints. (all you need to do is touch the sensor over and over again with the registered fingers on your device)

4. In the event the troubleshooting steps above don't resolve the issue, follow the steps within this article called Reset your Pixel or Nexus to factory settings.

- Repeat the previous steps to add a new fingerprint.

Just in case completing a factory data reset and repeating the steps above on the device doesn't resolve the trouble, our next step will be to move forward and replace the device.

I went through 3 with this issue. All that voodoo (remove and re-add, factory reset, etc) is hooey. I believe it's a hardware issue. I would get it replaced. I feel it's the same as the screen, hit or miss as to whether you'll get a good one.
