Pixel 2 XL Screen Discussion

Well, this is kind of part of the problem. LG is currently incapable of consistently making good OLED displays for smartphones. It is certain that some Pixel 2 XL screens will look just fine, and others will be atrocious, with everything in-between. It's panel lottery.

Lots of phone have screen issues so I don't think it's just LG

the XL 2 has no issues. if you consider actuate colors an issue... that seems like it's your problem. Most graphics on apps are intentionally washed out to accommodate overly saturated screens which are the norm. I looked at an image I sent to someone for a commercial for a pretty crazy saturated piece...it looks near identical to my dci-p3 display.

I'm sorry the off axis tinting is an issue. I don't see this on my Pixel XL nor do I see it on my 2 65" LG OLED TVs.

As I've mentioned before, I have a P2XL on pre-order and as of now, I plan to keep it that way. I'll decide to return or exchange, or keep, depending on what I get.

But, since we are all looking at screens so closely in this thread, I thought I'd do my own 30-second test. Here's what I did...

I quickly compared two phones within reach: Pixel XL butted-up against a new S8. Both on the same white screen, both with brightness on full. Pixel is not on sRGB, the S8 on adaptive.

What did I find?
Straight on, the Pixel appeared "whiter", the S8 just a tad blue.
At a 45 degree angle, the Pixel clearly had a red/pink hue, the S8 clearly had a blue tint - just like most of the P2XL videos I've seen.

Maybe what's most important, is that both owners (me: Pixel, wife: S8) have considered our displays to be absolutely perfect. Side by side, they look anything but perfect, and they've both gone off in two different directions. I've checked my XL color when tilted in the past week a number of times, but it actually didn't catch my eye until I did two phones side-by-side.

I realize is is just a 30-second test - not baselined, not scientific. But, it might indicate how much variance we all might have right in the "perfect" displays so many of us think we currently own.

For myself, I almost cancelled my pre-order a number of times over the past week, but I've settled into the hope that any variance in the P2XL screen is as far down in the noise as the "perfect" displays my wife and I currently own.

Does that image look dull in any way? As for the tilting. Do you typically use your phone at extreme angles?

The phones colors are fine. That is known despite what others say. Using the phone on a desk quite a bit so tint is an issue. I don't consider 20-30 degrees an extreme angle.

Had a Nexus 5, 6P, Pixel XL, and now a day on the 2 XL. I usually keep my brightness below 30% unless out in bright sunlight and had my OG XL on sRGB when I saw the 2XL screen was going to run that and it did look different for the first 5 minutes and then I got used to it and actually like it now. If I didnt read all this hubbub about the screen before getting the phone I might not have noticed it. I think the screen is great for what I need it to do. I do notice the blue shift on a white background screen when its tilted away from my face but who looks at their phone like that plus I like darker backgrounds and have it running the auto black theme with the dark wallpaper I use and the blacks look great. I gave the phone to my wife, not a techie, and she said it looks great and whatever she says goes. Kidding aside, I think if you got the 2 XL for what I did, software experience, updates, security, camera, ill live with a good, not great display. I mean i call it the the Best Buy effect, when your looking at the store all all those 80" tvs the 65" ones look tiny. Take that 65" tv home and it looks huge.

Honestly I've been pretty vocal about my distaste for the screen. But I decided to just use the phone and forget about the screen issues. And it doesn't bother me much. Additionally I am sure that Google will update it with a more saturated color profile. Because there's been a huge backlash

One thing to think about here as well. All of this techie outlets LOVE a good controversy since it drives up clicks. They have EVERY reason to make this out to be more than it is for page-views and alone. Not saying that it isn't a thing just that the industry and the tech media thrives on this type of stuff.

This is right on. That's how all media works. It's sad but is the state of our media. I still remember when Erika the YouTube reviewer made a video right after the n6 or 6p came out and said the screen had burn in after like 2 days. I still have both of those phones and no issues. I lost respect for her after that. Anything for a click.

Yes, they know early adopters will hyperventilate over any small thing and they can easily turn their obsession into clicks and views. The only opinion that matters on the phone that I'm going to purchase and use is mine. Everyone could hate it but if I'm happy with it than it is money well spent.

Just look at these forums. They are FILLED with obsessive compulsive people that are legitimately canceling one order and placing another because they MAY get a phone one day earlier. Crazy.

I like the color actually, just a little cooler than I like but seems like the pixel 1 XL with sRGB turned on.

I was happy until I noticed the black crushing issue. I have a few backgrounds that we're great on my last couple AMOLED screens, very dark with lots of details. This screen does not do these backgrounds Justice.//uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171020/7de1eba3710cf76f86b653a5b782bfca.jpg//uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171020/065f93f0dff8b31247a95c27cecbf39c.jpg//uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171020/f7c0f29b97a648a94def8aa5f5934acd.jpg//uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171020/7f8e2a143a41e0920c9ea8291925ae72.jpg//uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171020/1786bf9688209d51ee4aeff43aa1c697.jpg

Love these wallpapers!

This is a photo taken with the Pixel 2? What does an image taken with the phone camera have to do with whether or not the display is dull?

They already said they will be adding the garbage profile everyone has come to love. Of course by then, you will be used to accurate colors and it will look terrible to you.

Did they? I thought they said they were only considering it?

Vivid mode is already on the device. It boosts saturation by 10%. It's barely noticeable. I think a lot of people are wanting like a 20-40% boost, similar to what Samsung does in their default profile.
