Pixel 2 XL Screen Discussion

Honestly LCD displays are annoying in this aspect ratio. When you watch videos or play games you can see the black bars because they're not totally black. It kind of ruins the whole thing
I had the G6, and it was a pretty nice screen for being LCD. Granted always on display kinda sucks with LCD, and blacks are never truly black. But at least it had the option to adjust the warm vs cool of the screen. I could push it all the way from a warm yellow (3000K) screen to a ice cold blue (6000K) screen.

I stand by what I said in the other thread: there seem to be pretty big differences between units and in how people perceive the display. I'll wait for mine to arrive and make up my own mind.

I definitely see banding at a 45* angle. Ouch LG, ouch.

That's all you can do. Just remember that people make decisions emotionally then justify them rationally. This is especially true with large purchases. I was very hyped about the P2XL, but I want to be realistic about it too.

That's not banding, that's the camera being unable to capture the screen due to the refresh rate (I believe).

I've been using me XL 2 and it seems fine. if I look at it from a stupid angle I notice a tint, but nothing crazy.

Crazy thought crossed my mind today: why didn't Google just use the IPS display from the G6? Properly calibrated that display would be amazing, and I don't believe the XL screen is actually curved in any way.

That and then they couldn't use daydream anymore. I doubt they would sell a phone that didn't work with their accessories.

Got mine, I have used pretty much every phone that's released. Recently coming from Note 8, V30, essential and even iPhone 8 plus

Comparing to all of them Note 8 screen is in another level, essential is LCD and looks great. V30 had banding issues aganist white backgrounds. Now Pixel 2 XL, it's better than V30 screen and does definitely better job aganist lighter backgrounds compared to V30. Definitely not the best screen out there but also not like V30 bad. Unless you are very particular about having the best screen possible, the Pixel 2 XL does look great and I do like the realistic colors much better. Unless you compare it right next to say Note 8 you will not even notice that much.

But again you got to try yourself at home and then make your decision. Personally I was almost about to order the smaller Pixel 2 as backup after reading/watching all the complaints. But glad I didn't do it, personally this a keeper and screen is not a deal breaker for me.

My two cents.

Haven't seen it in person, but coming from a Note 5, I think anything will be an improvement.
I realize in my old age (34) I need my phone to do different things.

I need battery life (maybe muted colors will help).
I need something without crap, that flys (the Note 5 is barely keeping up). Need pure Android - fast processor.
I dont really care about wireless charging (I still plug in for fast-charging, wireless is too wonky with a case).
Use it to play the occasional game, listen to music, and youtube - I use the TabS2 and Acer Chromebook for movies, reading, etc...

So I doubt the slight screen issues that seem to be very user opinionated will sway me away. I have a feeling this thing is going to blow my mind compared to the Note 5.

Thoughts?

Well here's my story. My first Note 5 had a problem with charging. I had to order a replacement which was going to take weeks so I ordered a Nexus 6P for overnight delivery.

I started using that and when my replacement Note 5 arrived I never used it. The 6P was just amazing.

I then the following year ordered the Pixel XL and was blown away. Still to this day it's an amazing phone. If you are worried about any screen issues with the 2XL the first XL won't disappoint and it's probably cheaper at this point. One other favor in the original XL's favor is original backup photo quality to Google Photos for life as apposed to the 2XL only getting it until 2020.

Yeah it's a bit long term. In the 2XL's favor is the system updates for 3 years compared to 2 for the original XL.

If you can wait about a month I think you would have a much better picture.

Just my thoughts.

I am totally getting a Stormtrooper 2XL for myself.

No regular pixel uses a Samsung panel. XL uses an LG panel, which has same issues on V30
They're not really the same issues on the V30...

V30 has banding issues.

Pixel 2 XL has blue tint and lower saturation /vivid colors

I finally had a chance to open mine up, and its not nearly as bad as what it was made to be. Yes, the screen has grain on white, and yes there's a blue shift, but they do not bother me. (I see grain on the Note 8 display I'm typing this on, btw, but it's not as bad) When I worked for ATT I had a Nexus 6 as my company phone, and the screen on the 2 XL reminds me a LOT of the Nexus 6's. Is the screen a deal breaker? Not by any means. Is it a bad screen? No, not really. It is not by any means the best screen in the world, but it is certainly not the worst. Your mileage may vary, but I am pleasantly surprised after some of what's been said since the reviews came out.

My Stormtrooper/Panda/Penguin 2XL was ordered last week, through verizon. I mean they are giving me $200 for my note 5 (shhhh dont say anything, not sure why so much, but I'll take it).

I am very excited about the 2XL, and I will see for myself. I have 2 weeks to play around and can return if I dont like it.

So thats what I will be doing.
