Pixel 5 Concerns: Gap and Overheating

I'm thinking of cancelling my order for the 2 Pixel 5's I pre-ordered (one for me and for the wife) after seeing this. I live in Dubai and waiting for me to get it is a big pain let alone if it did have an issue returning it is not as simple as y'all can do it as I am using a freight forwarded to have it transferred from my UK Virtual Address to Dubai.
I don't blame you .

Ok, I had a few mins to try replicate the recording overheat. At 6m16s of 4k/60fps video recording the recording stops with an error message "Recording stopped. Close Camera until device cools off."

Tried it again after a few minutes, got the same error 3m03s later.

Ambient temperature is 25C, under a fan indoors, no direct sunlight. Spigen ultra hybrid cover.

Might just be my phone...

I'll try without the cover at some point.

Hi, welcome to AC!

Is this the Sony phone all over? I remember same thing but they had it intentionally set I believe to trigger at certain temperatures

I was thinking of getting the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro 5G but I just saw the GSM Arena review and the camera is crappy and full of noise. I will take my chances, hopefully by the time mine are shipped they would have sorted the issue.

Hopefully your phone is good... As some stated previously released phones many people had no issues..when there were reports of issues.. Good luck hope it comes in flawlessly

Not familiar with Xiaomi Mi, I would go with One Plus .

Ok, so this morning I tried 4k/60fps recording in safe mode, cover off, screen brightness as low as it could go, dark room, no other apps running, ambient temperature in the low 20s celcius.

Recording stopped after 8m18s. Longest one yet. Wooooo! :-/

I've reported the issue to google pixel support chat, which was escalated to a "specialist", who sent me a very unhelpful long-winded cut/paste that boiled down to "phones get hot sometimes. try using it in cooler/easier conditions".

Maybe there are just a couple of dud units, but if you live in a warm climate I'd think twice about purchasing a pixel 5 for a little while at least. Yes, 4k/60fps recording is not light-weight, but my wife's galaxy fe20 handles it easily, and the car mount GMaps shutdown is unsettling.

Google is replacing the phone "as there is a safety concern".

I'd appreciate it if other pixel 5 owners in warm environs could try replicating the issue to confirm it is not widespread/I don't have to push for a refund instead. Basically just record 4k/60fps video for up to 10 mins with ambient temp of >20C should do it.

I really hope this is an isolated issue. :-/

I'm guessing the 4k@60 is taxing the 765g

While I doubt I would do any lengthy recording, it would still bother me.

How does it do with 1080 @ 60, 120, or 240?

Yep, presumably a factor.

20mins recording at 1080/60 was fine in non-challenging conditions. No 120/240 option.

Big battery (by pixel standards), sealed ip68 and small form factor won't help either.

Interestingly this reviewer experienced the 4k recording shut-down. After a factory reset though he couldn't replicate it and when he received another pixel 5 (see another of his more recent vids) it was also fine.

A commenter on the video also mentioned they were getting overheating issues but a replacement pixel 5 was fine.
