There is no problem with the speaker. I believe this "issue" only came up because someone realized that the P5 had an in-display speaker and set out to find problems with it. The speaker isn't a 10, more like a solid 7, but if you listened to it in-call or used as a speakerphone without knowing this, you'd not notice any issues.
Can only speak for myself but that's not how it went down for me. It was more finding myself repeatedly mashing at volume up during phone calls and trying to find quiet spaces while holding my hand over my other ear so I could actually hear the call. It'll be interesting to see if it is phone, ear or situation dependent...or something random like whether you sport a beard. I've never needed to crank my phone's volume in the past and I'm happy with my new s20fe's volume set at about 30%.
Hmmm...interesting even though not experiencing any issues I'll like to see this .I'm guessing this is Google's response to those who are having issues with the top speaker/background noise:

If anyone looking to buy the pixel 5 , I've it the 2 week trial , and if not satisfied return it . Store hands on won't be enough to test it through different scenarios.
I never returned my phone , but yes I believe there is .Any restocking fees apply to returning?
It's not bad at all , trust me I would mention it![]()
Now with adaptive sound with December update , pretty cool.I'm with Mustang on this. I just came off a 6 year old Nokia Icon and find the Pixel 5 speaker more than adequate. Bose stereo it's not. For an under display speaker I find it does quite well. I can hear the phone fine driving a Mack 18 wheeler all day. Ooops, I mean when I'm stopped, yeah umm stopped I mean, that's when I tested it.
