Pixel ALMOST making me rethink my iPhone

I didn't realize until I saw you post about it on another thread that the iOS Google Photos app will not upload unless the app is open. I had ~3,200 items that had not backed up!

That's my main complaint about the iPhone. I wish my photos would upload to the Google Photos app automatically.

Someone had mentioned it before but this is a game of what do you prefer the most. There will be concessions on both sides depending on which phone you choose.

Agreed. There are many things I miss about Android, but the hardware experience, for me, is better on the iPhone 7 Plus vs the Pixel devices.

Who knows, maybe once the LifeProof cases come out for the Pixel/Pixel XL, I may change my mind and get the XL again. I really do miss Android.

Honestly, that's about the only complaint I can find with the iPhone 7 Plus other than I get a little bored with it. I slightly prefer the camera on the Pixel XL but it really is splitting hairs. I love the optical 2x zoom on the 7 Plus camera so it is pretty much even in the camera department when that is taken into consideration. Both are excellent options and for me it really just boils down to personal preference and for me that would be the Pixel. I much prefer how apps work together and communicate with each other on Android and cannot stand iOS notifications. But if you asked me which was the better value for the money spent, a point which I think you were trying to make earlier in the thread, I would agree with you that the 7 Plus offers more to warrant its price point than does the Pixel. Fortunately I don't have to make the decision on which device to keep. That brings me to the bonus feature of the Pixel: it looks so much like an iPhone my wife doesn't even know I plunked down $1k on a new phone just a few weeks after I plunked down $1k on a 7 Plus :)

I would have gone the other direction and said, that I feel both phones earn their places at the top, IMO the XL beats out the 7+ on best value. But I get how easy it would be for someone to value either over the other.

I am always bored with an iPhone which is why I went back to android. After trying several different android devices I finally found the one that is closest to an iPhone experience. The pixel is simplistic, smooth, reliable and as the iphone users say "it just works." I always found myself in the battery stats of every other android phone I've owned trying to see what is eating my battery and looking for a rogue app. I love the software and I even love the hardware. It's a solid device all around.

I refuse to leave android until iOS knows how to manage notifications like android does. I agree with you about iOS notifications, they are absolutely terrible and I can't use a phone with that type of notification operation.

They definitely each earn their place at the top on their own merits. When saying that I obviously am taking hardware into consideration a tad more than software. Again, this is entirely subjective, but I think water and dust resistance are very important features which are becoming mainstream additions to flagship devices. Having two young kids and being fairly accident prone myself after a few too many adult beverages it is something I have come to appreciate. In the couple months I've had the 7 Plus I've also grown fond of the dual lens setup. In my opinion one of the first fairly innovative things to come from Apple in a while. That said, the user experience of Google's version of Android is more suited to my likes and needs. The Pixel XL is my favorite device I've had in a while. Is it $300 better than my Nexus 6p? That I am not so sure about. The best device isn't necessarily the best value.

Same here. I switch back and forth between Android and iPhone quite often and I backup from both devices to Google Photos. I didn't realize until I saw you post about it on another thread that the iOS Google Photos app will not upload unless the app is open. I had ~3,200 items that had not backed up! iOS apps are definitely more polished in general but they are not always more functional.
Yep. Apple only wants their products to do this.

Yep, its amazing that after all this time iOS notifications are still garbage.

The battery of the XL is one of the pleasant surprises for me. One of the reasons I always found myself going back to the iPhone is battery life. Nexus 6P didnt cut it. S7 edge was good, not great. Note 7 was sufficient but...RIP. The XL is the first Android device I've had that I can go all day and not worry about battery status. Standby time is great. Screen on time consistently over 5 hours and probably better as I've yet to fully discharge my battery. It is every bit as good as the 7 Plus battery. After 3 weeks with the XL I'm still in the honeymoon stage (usually only lasts a week for me). Its absolutely a joy to use and I find myself having a hard time putting it down.

I can't get over the standby time on the pixel. I don't have the XL and I'm still getting better battery life than I did on the s7 edge, it's great.

I absolutely love my 7 Plus, but I get bored easy. I hate the notifications on the iPhone. Apple really needs to fix them. I miss Android and I miss the customization. I think once LifeProof comes out with a case for the Pixel XL, I may buy one again. Then it'd get the water resistance I wanted and I'd probably be happy with it. Until the Samsung Galaxy S8/S8 edge comes out. Haha. Such is the circle of life with my cell phone obsession.

What's your battery percentage at the end of the day with the XL? My iPhone 7 Plus is around 60% with moderate usage. If the XL gets similar battery life, I'm picking one up.

I don't think the XL battery life is AS GOOD as the iphone 7+ but for an Android device it's extremely sufficient. You have to think that the iphone is using a 1080p ips screen while the XL has a super AMOLED quad HD display. That's how the plus gets such good battery life, while the AMOLED screen on the XL doesn't even compare.

I would pick a XL over the 7 Plus. With the Pixel you're getting AMOLED screen, headphone jack, stock android. With iphone you're losing big time on screen quality.

Agreed, I won't switch to an iphone until they get rid of 1080p ips display and iOS improves their notifications. It's crazy how much more advanced android phones are with their displays. Screen quality and battery are my two biggest factors on a phone, both of which are present in the pixel.

I'm usually around 60%, also with moderate usage. My office has concrete walls which are not great for signal propagation (thank goodness TMO finally got low frequency spectrum) so it takes a little hit to the battery due to that. I topped off yesterday in my truck and this morning still have 62% after streaming Spotify on the afternoon commute and letting my 3 yr old son watch YouTube videos at the restaurant so wife and I could attempt to enjoy dinner.

Lol we have the same problem. I notice we both pop up in the same forums with every new release. I honestly thought the Note 7 would be my cure. I'd still have it if not for obvious reasons. Miss the heck out of that phone. Still have S7, S7 Active, 6P, 7 Plus, 6S Plus, and of course the XL. Need to get on Swappa and list some but never find the time.

Anxiously awaiting the LifeProof too although I really hate messing up the feel of this device to get the water and dust resistance. It really is the perfect size. Much easier to handle than the Plus. Last LifeProof I had was on the G5 and it didn't mess up the feel of that one too bad so I will give it a chance.

If I had to pick I'd also definitely go XL. As I said above the notifications are garbage on iOS (that may be too complimentary). However the screen on the 7 plus is pretty dang nice. The colors pop on it just as nice as an AMOLED to my 40 year old eyes. On a 5.5" screen there are very few use cases where a QHD screen is noticeably better than 1080p imho. I'd take a 1080p AMOLED and a little extra battery life any day of the week. Biggest benefit is obviously VR if one is into that.

I wouldn't discount VR in the future of cool things mobile, especially the way Google has implemented it. If you're one to keep your phone more than a year, then a QHD panel should be at the top of your list because you'll want to give VR a serious look. It's rather fun! This coming from a guy who was going to get the complimentary VR headset from Google and resell it on eBay. But once I tried it, I realized it was a keeper. Not to mention, there has been a bevy of games that have hit the street since I've received my headset. This is just food for thought

Just got xl today..
Im coming from ip7plus...
Honestly i dont know which one to give up.. i cant maintain 2 flagships..
Hmmm but im in love with pixel..
I had s7 also but this pixel is really more fluid than s7..

I don't actually understand the issue with iPhone notifications. I have an android tablet and don't like the clutter of icons in the status bar.
