Pixel & Pixel XL Pricing Rumors

I noticed the GSM unlocked versions of the Moto Z and Z Play are up for pre-order now.

OS/security updates seems to be a boondoggle for Moto. I don't know how much the VZW aspect of this came into play here.

If that has changed, I'd like to know because one of the reasons I discounted Moto is because of their spotty and broken promise update history.

http://www.droid-life.com/2016/07/21/moto-z-droid-review/ didn't seem to think much of the camera on the Z.

The Z Play allegedly runs hot after a few minutes of use. (comment section of GSMarena
Motorola Moto Z Play - User opinions and reviews

Otherwise, I am favorably impressed with the Lenovomoto/Lenovorola phones. But those shortcomings tend to kill my interest in Moto phones.

Still waiting on the Pixel phones to come out. At that point, I'll know my options a bit better.
Yeah you will always have different phones run hot. My Nexus 5 gets extremely hot but I know others that don't. Just snapdragon I guess. But with everything else and one hell of a good battery life during a day, Moto Z play is my back up if Pixel XL just fails with price.

When Motorola was under Google's umbrella, they had the best track record with updates bar none. They started slipping as soon as they were sold to Lenovo. Now that they're fully under Lenovo's control, updates have fallen way down the priority list. Don't expect regular security updates, and be prepared to wait for Android updates. If update speed is important to you, stay away from the Moto Z. But if that doesn't bother you, go for it. Seems to be a great phone, otherwise.

I'm not sure what I'll do if these High price rumors pan out. I honestly thought Google wouldn't go that route with their phones, and I would be very disappointed if they did. It would have to be an amazing phone, like Zendroid1 said. If it's not, I guess I'd stick with my 2014 Moto X and see what comes around in the spring.

Very true. I always thought OS updates was important to me which is why I stayed with Nexus but I'm learning more and more that it's not so important. As long as the phone is great and lasts me then I will be happy.

Yeah, I'm sitting on hold ready to jump when I find what I'm looking for. I'm liking larger displays having been on a 5 incher for the last 3 plus years. Honestly, if I could get the Note7 in a GPE edition, I think I'd be pretty pleased. Nice sized display, but the overall phone is not that large,

You may be right. I've been so controlled by carrier update cycles that this time around, I wanted to go Nexus to escape the carrier madness... not to mention the uninstallable bloat. Perhaps moreso than OS updates, I think the monthly security updates are pretty important. Although being stuck on Lollipop, I'm pretty anxious to move up the OS ladder.

So I have been stuck waiting to see what is going to be released for 2016... especially in the Nexus realm... now Pixel... and the late rumors are discouraging. Within certain constraints, I'm willing to think outside the box. However, the box containing the walled garden almost seems like a black hole dragging me in.

I am very interested in any reasonable options that I may be overlooking.

Lmao you sound just like me. It's like I just can't get away from the Nexus/Pixel line because of feeling safe lol. But I've been doing so much research this year because I really need a new phone. My Nexus 5 is like done. There are only like a select few I really would like to buy if it's not the Pixel XL. Only problem is the Xiaomi 5s is only coming out in China and the Moto Z Force is only for Verizon. But then I found (with people's help) the Moto Z Play is coming unlocked AND it's battery life is f'n fantastic. Which is one thing I mostly care about besides OS/Security updates and this phone delivers. Over the OnePlus3 and others.

The whole carrier experience turned me off with my S6 Active. I had to install package Disabler to hide all things ATT. Even Samsung had a ton of plugins, apps and services intending to provide a great user experience.

I'm looking for a device and manufacturer that sees past the 2 year support cut-off, and doesn't magically drop in performance with updates. I swear, carriers bake in some type of slugware in their OTAs just so people upgrade.

Hopefully the Pixel and Google can give us a fresh experience

I'll look a little harder at the Z/Z Play, but yeah, the Force is probably the one I'd be most interested in... except it is VZW only at this time. While I love a big battery, I also like camera performance. My GS4 takes great shots (in good light), but is so slow in operation that I frequently miss the shot I wanted to take. And the display is too dim in bright light to see what I'm doing.

All-in-all, I'm looking for flagship performance with Apple-esque upgrades and the 2016 flagships don't seem to cut it at this point. But maybe that Pixel XL....

I've really had pretty good service and customer service from AT&T. I'm not looking to leave them either. I don't think any of the 4 major carriers have any bragging rights when it comes to OS updates.. except for the iPhones. That is the update model I would like to see Google take with Android. So hello Nexus/Pixel. Maybe.

And you're so right about that 2 year update cycle. That is just lame imo. Which is really pushing me to Apple if the Pixel doesn't make the grade.

I keep hoping I've overlooked an Android phone that will excite me. But I haven't found it yet. Either the HW falls short... or the OS experience falls short. Or it leads me to the iPhone.

I hear ya. If it weren't for my love of Android and a ton of Google services, I'd see myself with an iPhone.

Here are the devices I've looked at over the past few weeks:

Honor 8
Moto z play
One Plus 3
S7
Note 5
S7 edge

Is it possible to get a quad HD 5.5" Samsung flat display, Samsung camera, near stock Android, 32-64 GB onboard, SD card slot, non glass back, wireless charging, 3500mah battery and fingerprint sensor?

Excellent question. I'm hoping the Pixel XL may answer that call. I'll even take 128GB internal storage and no SD card.

Looked at many reviews and real life tests, Moto Z Play killed it and delivered. We shall see though if the Pixel XL can deliver with a reasonable price.

My question is, are they going to provide some sort of financing or payment plan if this thing really is as expensive as we are hearing it might be???

Hopefully financing with Google isn't tied to Google Project Fi this time.

I like what one poster said about financing.

House? Yes.
Car? Maybe.
Phone? No.

It may be time to re-examine priorities.

Technically we've been financing phones since the beginning - it's just more clear now.

True, but there was little option, iirc. And once the phone was fully amortized, the carrier never dropped the price of service either. Now we have the option of paying full price... or financing (thankfully at 0%). But really, has anyone ever entered into a payment plan to buy a new laptop? (excepting those who buy with a credit card and make monthly payments at typically high interest rates).

Yep. That's why it's more clear now. When your phone is paid off, your bill drops as it should.

In your laptop example, I'd argue (without stats) that most (US) buyers will use a credit card for purchases over a certain amount and that a $500+ laptop would fall under that.

I haven't financed a phone since 2011, when I was still stuck in carrier plan purgatory. I don't plan to start again now.
