Pixel - Signal dropping (Update: Google Knows)

Re: Verizon Pixel XL - Dropping calls?

I may have to walk back my earlier statement that 7.1.2 did not improve signal strength. I am a little more stable than before on signal with Verizon at least. I am actually getting -104, and 14 at some parts of the house now. That's as good as my old Moto X ever got.

Okay you guys still having trouble, try this:
from phone dialer
*#*#4636#*#*
three dots
select radio band
choose Automatic
cycle Cellular Radio Power off for count of ten, then back on.

Re: Verizon Pixel XL - Dropping calls?

After setting mine to Automatic, I am getting better signal strength than the Motorola. By around 7db.

Yes, you have to sign up for the beta program and install the beta 7.1.2 OTA. I have had no issues with the beta. It also seems to have stabilized my Bluetooth connection with my Ford Sync.

Well that is good to hear. I didn't do it last night since I wanted my alarm to go off (didn't want a bug or something) lol. I am very tempted to download it today and test it out to help w/ the feedback :P.

Re: Verizon Pixel XL - Dropping calls?

My signal quality varies significantly based on location even in the same market area. One zip code is great. Another is dead.

With the Pixel XL it didn't seem to matter where I was or what carrier I used (T-Mobile or VZW). The signal would drop out completely, seemingly at random.

I figure there are enough "working" handsets that it isn't worth it for Google to troubleshoot and fix the problem. It's cheaper to take the returns.

Well said, as this is probably the case.

Re: Verizon Pixel XL - Dropping calls?

This appears to be happening to Nexus users as well. After they were upgraded to Nougat. It seems to be a conflict with Nougat and carrier aggregation. Phones on Marshmallow and older, and iPhones do not have the issue. I can't find a any user that has the problem, that has upgraded to 7.1.2 beta, to see if it's fixed.

I purchased my Pixel XL from Google back in December and have had constant signal dropping/signal loss issues since day one. Examples..

1.) About 25-50 times a day my phone will completely drop/lose signal and I will get a hollow triangle in the signal/bars icon in the notification bar. After about 30-60 seconds it will reconnect. Sometimes it will stay connected for a good while after this, other times it will repeat this process 5-10 times until it gets somewhat stable.

2.) 25% of the time I lose signal like this I will get a "no sim card error" when this happens I have to power cycle my phone otherwise it will never reconnect.

3.) A lot of the time, I will experience this immediately after receiving a text, as a call is coming in, or if I'm placing a call, immediately disconnecting me. When this happens as a call is coming in, it will ring once, my phone will lose signal, and on top of that my phone doesn't even show that I missed a call so unless I catch the number or who is calling me. If i don't, I have no idea who it was that tried to call me or don't ever get notified that someone did in fact try to call me.

3.) I know within a 25 foot radius numerous locations around my town where the signal will drop. Also at my house, it is constantly happening. If i walk to my bathroom or to my office, boom signal drop.

4.) Everytime the signal drops, my voicemail gets deactivated. Yes that's right deactivated. As in I don't have a voicemail. The voicemail tab in the dialer/phone app disappears and I have to manually toggle it off and back on for it to show up. Meaning if someone calls me and my phone drops signal, or if they try to call while my phone is in the process of dropping signal, my phone will not display a missed call and on top of that, they can't even leave me a voicemail.

5.) My wi-fi calling also disables everytime my signal drops. I have to constantly re-enable it to the point if I have wifi, I've gotten in the habit of turning on airplane mode, enabling wifi, and then turning on wifi calling.

6.) when the signal drops, I can't even dial out to 911. Imaging a burglar robbing my house and me telling him if he can hold on a second while I power cycle my phone so I can dial 911.

I've been RMA'd a new pixel and still have the same issue. Tier 3 verizon support said it wasn't a network issue on their end. Which i don't think it is anyways since I've been with Verizon for 10 years, in the same town, having numerous devices during that time span and have never had this issue. Google support refuses to issue me a refund, they have no possible fixes or suggestions and refuse to work with Verizon at all. A direct quote from the team lead I talked to earlier, "all we can do is file an RMA for you". When I asked what is the course of action if my 2nd replacement pixel has the same issue his response was, and I kid you not, "we would ask for you to file an RMA".

Sorry to hear this. I'm on Verizon and have had a Pixel since late January. So far signal has been solid, and "hangs in there" more so compared to my Note 5 when in locations with notoriously poor connectivity (basement, large rebar/concrete buildings). Appreciate that the cell towers in my area could be working differently than yours, so that could be one variable.

You may have already tried, but if not, suggest getting a different SIM card and then have Verizon activate it in their store, or via online chat support. When I tried to activate my Pixel out of the box, never could connect to 3G or LTE. The technician I chatted with said he activated mine for XLTE. Not sure if that is available in my area or not, but soon as he "flipped the switch", LTE signal was there.

Cellular network settings on my Pixel are: Preferred network type = Global; Advanced Calling = Use LTE...is on; System select (CDMA) = Automatic

Not sure if the above will help, but may be worth a try.

Wow! I feel for you. It seems as of late and on other forums more and more people are suffering with these issues.. it's more widespread then Google probably wants to think. Once all of these backorders get filled for this phone I am certain there are going to be a lot more disappointed folks without answers or fixes as well

Broccoli, if you have Wi-Fi at home, try turning on airplane mode, then Wi-Fi. Make sure Wi-Fi calling is on. Is the phone stable while in this setup?

Yes when I'm at home I have to do what you describe otherwise I'm dropping signal/service when I walk between different rooms in my house. The problem is I have to have advanced calling turned on for wi-fi calling to work and advanced calling makes my phone lose signal more frequently. Also everytime it drops signal my wi-fi calling turns off along with my voicemail. So you can imagine how annoying it is to constantly have to check all these things on my phone for it to even be able to function as a phone.

I've tried everything you've suggested along with numerous other suggestions from various other forums and posts. Nothing has worked on my end and from what I can gather for those people having the same issues, nothing has worked for them either. Google says its a network issue, Verizon says its a google issue and neither of them are willing to work together. I guess since it seems to be a fairly isolated incident and not affecting a huge user base, Google's plan of action is to just keep RMA'ing phones to people rather than fix the issue. A guy on the GooglePixel subreddit is currently on his 5th RMA'd device for this exact issue

Wow, I really feel bad for you guys with the problems for so long and seemingly with maybe no end in sight. I don't have your patience and would have just eaten it and chalked this up to experience for future reference. To have a phone that doesn't work for that price is just awful. I'd have gotten something else by now especially after multiple returns and attempts.
Google really seems to have dropped the ball on offering any fix. Multiple replacements that don't work any better just tells me that Google has a real problem here. I wonder how the folks that don't come in to forums are dealing with this. I strongly considered getting a pixel as the initial reviews were pretty good and held back. Then with the supply fiasco and starting to hear the signal drop issues I was glad I didn't order one on release day. One thing for certain when P2 drops I will not be even considering one until some time has passed and any issues show up.

If you have airplane mode on and WiFi on at home, your cellular radio should be off. I set mine up that way cause my home signal is so poor and it saves battery. Yeah, I have to remember to turn the cell back on when I leave home. But, I am so obsessed with my phone, that's not been a problem. LOL.
