Place accented letters with Bluetooth 3.0 Keyboard has stopped. Any suggestions what has gone wrong?

I have a Galaxy Tab S6 Lite and could place accented letters using Alt+e but now it won't let me. I have a feeling it has to do with the keyboard language in settings, but I'm not sure which one I should use.
