Plastic covering the camera lens question?

Hey guys. I only realized tonight that there was an almost unnoticeable piece of plastic covering the lens and flash which i then went and removed. It was actually a little tricky to remove which got me wondering....... was i supposed to remove it or was it intended to stay on place? The actual circular piece in the centre of the lens was not covered just the square section around it! Anyone else remove this or perhaps snot even notice it until now?
