Platform switchers, how are you preparing to move to 3D/Android

I'm coming from webOS and planning on purchasing the 3D the day it arrives. I'm going to doc all my most used apps and research comparable ones in the Android market so I'm ready to go on day one. Also try to get some top quality wallpaper ready to go.

Also one Question, can you make mp3's into ringtones on gingerbread?

Of course, personally I use an app called ringdroid, it lets you tweak ringtones to your hearts content.

For your paid apps, email the developers they have an android version, and see if they will help you out, otherwise good luck and welcome!

I too am coming from webOs. In order to prepare for Andorid OS I have been tinkering with my wife's HTC Hero.

There is an app in the Marketplace that makes the Android launch page alot like webOS launch page. It uses cards the same as webOS and you can make it your default homepage I think.

I get lost in the marketplace over 200k apps to look through...so many compared to the PITIFUL Palm app store.

Very excited for the release of this phone.

The wait is killing me. Hopefully I'll be able to get one even though my upgrade isn't here yet.

Make sure you have a Gmail account, create one if you don't already have one. Try to export all your contacts to a CSV file and import it into GMail, that way, as soon as you log in to your Gmail account on the phone, all your contacts will be there. If you have facebook, be sure to link all accounts as well, works similar to how webOS operated.

If you haven't already done so, check out https://market.android.com/ to snoop around for any apps you might be interested in.

Watch lots of videos of HTC Sensation reviews so you know where everything is in Sense UI, actually, watch some Evo 4G reviews and other HTC Sense walkthroughs to familiarize yourself with the UI. When I was in your shoes, anticipating the release of the Evo 4G, I watch every Droid Incredible review I could find, and by the time the Evo 4G was in my hands, I knew where to go.

By the way, it didn't take long for me to kick the habit of all the Palm specific gestures from the gesture area. Maybe a week, that's about it.

Trust me, you'll love it. I was ecstatic when I got my Evo and amazed on how fast and how much better everything worked and looked. Never ever having to see the dreaded "too many cards" error was a blessing in itself. And while the notification system in webOS was nice, I like the one in Android just as well, if not better!

I'm switching from WM6.5, I've been stocking up on free apps from the Amazon App Store mostly, and playing with an Android build for my phone. I have to swith a few contacts over to gmail and clean up a bit, but I have most of it over there already.

Question... my main email account has been with Yahoo for years and I'm reluctant to switch it over to Gmail. I do have a Gmail account but I use it sparingly. Is it safe to assume that I can still view/sync Yahoo email and contacts via Android or is that a bad assumption?

Exactly what I've been doing. Coming from a Touch Pro 2 as well? I've missed something like 4 days total of Amazon's free app of the day. :D

Checking Yahoo mail is not a problem, however, I would export your Yahoo contacts to a csv file and import it to Gmail, it just makes keeping track and synching your contacts much easier that way. Also, whenever you add a new contact to your phone, don't store them on the phone, store them to the gmail account that way nothing gets lost.

If you depend on having the contacts in your old phone transferred over to the new phone using one of those machines they use at Best Buy and Sprint, just go to the contacts app, export all contacts to your sd card, then import them back into the gmail account (this all works from within the People app just click on Menu and then you will see Import/Export) Now to avoid seeing all those contacts double, you can click on View (also under Menu) and tell the phone to just show your gmail contacts.

But yeah, I have 3 yahoo accounts, 1 Gmail accounts, and 2 other accounts from other providers working on my Evo 4g.

Hope this helps.

I'm coming from years of iOS so it'll be quite a change.

I'm kinda excited for it though. :-)

I am coming from a Palm Pre also and cannot wait to get rid of this thing. WebOs is great but the hardware and the apps just cant compare to android. Pre owners have been waiting a LONG time to get some new hardware, so waiting another month for the 3D isn't too bad i suppose. Youtube has lots of videos on 'cool' apps, so i've been snooping around. We don't even have shazam, google street view, ringtone makers, etc. Although the webOs/preware community has been great, i feel it's time for a change.

Yeah, I'm coming from a TP2 also. I have been skipping more and more apps recently though as some of them I couldn't ever see a use for.

How do you do this? I've been seeing all these great free apps on the Amazon marketplace and cursing the fact that I didn't have an android phone yet, thinking it meant I couldn't get the apps. I want to start getting these apps so they're ready to go when I get my Evo 3D if it's possible.

Add me to the list of folks making the switch from a dying Palm Pre minus. Can't wait for this phone.

I actually left that part out by accident. I do have all of my contacts in my Gmail account as well as my Yahoo account so I should be good to just sync via the Gmail account. Thanks!

I think you have to have logged in from the Amazon App Store App on an Android phone before it will allow you to add them directly from the website, I'm not 100% on that though. Since I was able to log in from an Android build on my TP2, I've just been able to add apps to my account directly from Amazon.com.

Hope that helps.

Looks like I'll probably be switching to the 3D to from the Pre. Lack of a keyboard will most definitely bother me but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

Gonna have to learn specifics re: transferring my contacts to Gmail though.

Kinda out of subject, but has anyone ever seen a Florida Statue app for android?

It's something I use on my iPhone almost everyday at work.
