Before this thread runs away, someone with the issue needs to contact Samsung Plus, not 800 Samsung and ask the about it.

From what I have seen and heard, I believe all water sealing is done under the glass.

There is no need to speculate, someone needs to contact Samsung.

I would but I don't have my Note 7 yet.

Called Samsung and they said it's a feature for people who use full brightness in a completely dark room. If you look at it with your spen using the magnify feature, you can actually see your notification feeds.

Yup, wouldn't have even noticed it without this thread.

I'm almost certain it is by design. It's symmetrically consistent and doesn't seem like a quality control issue at all.

If it is by design, then EVERY N7, regardless of color, should be the same in this regard. Since that isn't the case, it is unlikely by design, unless those phones missing the gap are the ones that are defective.

Those holes are sealed with glue or rubber gaskets as shown in tear down videos so I am guessing if sealed properly they wont bleed light out of those holes. Now if light bleeds out like the OP says... is that normal with they way they seal the display?
Using glue can create an adequate seal, but that doesn't mean it won't allow light to pass through.

Glue can be translucent after all. Perhaps that's the case.

Lol then that feature is apparently missing on half their phones.

Unless the people who are reporting that they don't have the "issue" aren't being discerning enough to notice.

This is a known issue that has been reported on xda. Sammy knows too and doesn't care. They call it a feature. There is something called edge lighting in one of the settings. Can't remember where, but that may be different. I turned mine off just in case.

Nope - I have the Coral Blue and it has the gap and light bleed between the glass and metal band as well...what to do?

No. There's a buried setting. It's there. I saw it yesterday and went hmmm... then turned it off.

Return or exchange the phone. A gap is a defect and affects the usability of the phone with water.

Just checked mine and at least I don't have that "feature" per Samsung.

I highly doubt that a setting in the software is going to enable/disable a paper to be inserted between base and glass. If there is a gap, there is a gap.

Whether that gap is by design is the question

I think it's worth mentioning that whatever gap that was there on mine, it got covered up with my Neo Hybrid.

So I found this on XDA. (Please check your phone for this build quality issue. See picture and details. - Post #26)

Evidently, what gives our phones 'color' is a piece of cellophane that is inserted into the phone's enclosure. It could be that the cellophane doesn't cover every nook and cranny (as it might have on previous models) and so it gives the illusion of poor finish. If it isn't already obvious, they've also reported that water resistance isn't compromised.

Interestingly enough, you can make your phone transparent if you're so inclined.

I'd have to have my phone out of the case and then be in a pitch black room and then turn the screen brightness all the way up before it even manifests. Considering all the other issues people are having, I'm not sure if I should gamble on a replacement over such a cosmetic non-issue.

What are you guys planning to do?

The gap is a defect as I posted. I don't have that. There is some sort of edge lighting option also. That's what Sammy is talking about, but the gap is what the folks on xda and here are referring to. A gap is a defect and needs to be replaced or returned. I'm fortunate not to have that gap on either side. Tested to be sure.

I have a blue note 7... i just looked mine has the light showing through as well... but it doesnt bother me and i would have never noticed it. I do not plan on putting my phone in the water anyway.

See above.

All Note 7's have a 'gap'. You can slide a piece of paper under your screen.

Now whether or not the film inserted into the back of your phone (to give it color) obscures light from emitting from said gap is another thing entirely. For whatever reason, Samsung set the sealing gaskets deeper this year.
