On the fence regarding getting the Pixel 6 Pro or the Pixel 6. The main differentiator for me would be the Pro's telephoto lens.

I tried to search the sticky thread, "Let's see your Pixel 6 and 6 Pro photos!" using 'zoom' and 'telephoto' but the search results only returns text. If I want to see the pictures I have to click on individual posts.

What kind of photos do you use the Pixel 6 Pro telephoto lens for?

How often do you use it?

Is it a "must have" feature?

What is the best usage for the telephoto lens?

One usage of a telephoto is you can't get a photo like this without one....

The other is safety...

Would never have even considered getting up close to even the Moose...

The moose was taken with a 4XL; the other two with a Nikon F5 shooting Fuji Slide Film....
All with a telephoto.

And these shots would have also been impossible without a telephoto..(Nikon) but still you ask about the reasons for a telephoto lens. In my opinion, for photos of humans, landscape etc., a telephoto can be nice to have, can add some nice perspective to some photos. However, for wildlife a telephoto is a necessity; not just for safety but to get shots the animal won't allow close up. At a minimum the moose would have snorted and ran, but even the youngest when feeling cornered will put that rack down and charge; not good. As for the eagle, never would have gotten that shot without a long tele.

I have found the telephoto to be excellent. Here's the interior of The Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco, first at 1x, and then 4x. Crisp details, even in low light!

The telephoto also makes up for the 6 Pro camera's poorer macro photography (due to its larger sensor) -- holding the camera farther back and using telephoto to zoom in mimics macro photography well enough.

I'd like to point out also if you are using Tapatalk free version you cannot post full resolution photos on here so they will be compressed and no way near as sharp.

I've taken multiple pictures of my kids at choir, drama, and musical performances in the last few weeks. I was far away because of the seating in the auditoriums, but the pictures turned out amazing. (Sorry, not going to post them because they are minors and my kids and that would be weird-- just telling you the lens is wonderful in my experience.)

That is quite an impressive shot at 4X on a cell phone, taken inside with questionable light.

And true for most photos processed down to a .jpg file for posting on the internet, and loaded via a link to a forum. And I believe, Imgur also compresses those that are posted to other sites even more than what was uploaded.

I had expected the 20x hybrid zoom to be an unusable joke, but was very surprised how capable it was (though still clearly not as good as a purely optical zoom would render). I suspect it would do much, much better in steadier hands or via a tripod.

OK, I can see that the telephoto lens would be useful for shooting objects that are far away, like the wildlife shots. Not going to get that shot of the bald eagle without telephoto. The example of kids in the choir and the detail inside the Orpheum Theater is nice. However, could not the same shots of the kids in the choir and the theater have been achieved by a normal shot, then going into Photoshop and cropping the areas you wanted to "zoom in on" to say, a 1280x960 image? I do this all the time with my 5a and it works fairly well.

Now, admittedly it wouldn't be *quite* as good as the telephoto shot, but $300 better? (The price difference between 6 Pro and 6) This is my dilemma.

Cropping/digital zoom is ok, but you're going to get a photo that ends up being lower resolution, and probably less sharp. The telephoto will retain the good resolution.

Keep in mind that the $300 difference isn't just the camera. The 6 Pro also has 4 more GB of RAM, and might possibly be the only one that gets face unlock.

And wide angle/higher resolution selfie, and UWB, and mmWave across all models, and higher resolution/refresh display.

Sure. But the quality will not be there.
However, to be honest; most camera phone photos are not printed at 12x18 for display on walls, they are designed to be sent to friends family and are used to replace the old slide show from decades ago.

Some of the newer sensors most likely allow for larger enlargements and prints, but in reality how many really are enlarged and printed. I have never taken one of my cell phone photos and enlarged digitally on my computer and attempted to print out with standard software so not sure what I would get. Maybe I'll try it...someday.

And the shots I posted, other than the Moose, were shot with some very expensive and quite heavy camera equipment; posted just to show how important a telephoto would be if shooting wildlife and for photo that might be enlarged for wall hanging.

If you feel that digitally enhanced close up shots are all that you will need, then the $300 extra is an important issue. You look at that photo of the 20x shot of the moon, it is very impressive for a cell phone camera. True he is using the zoom lens, but it is only 4X optical, the rest is magic. What you need is someone to post some telephotos shots from a Pixel 6 without the tele lens.

I used to keep one of my Nikons with an 80-200 lens sitting by the back sliding door to catch shots of wildlife out my back door, but somewhere in time it was relegated back to the bag, and I just use my 4XL to catch photos of the Moose tearing up my trees. No doubt the phone is so much more convenient; especially as a person gets older.

So, don't forget convenience of shooting and getting the tele shot you want or shooting and then having to manipulate the photo to get the shot you want. The shot you want at that time the photo was taken is the one you can immediately send to the friends and family; the one you download and manipulate via PS or other software is the one that will be sent later and in some cases, sit on the computer and never sent. Just saying....

I use mine all the time. Sometimes I get a better shot going to 4x zoom and moving back a bit than using the cropped main sensor.
