Re: Please help drop galaxy s4 in water

Hello, about 48 hours ago i dropped my phone(Samsung s4) into the toilet. I immediatly pulled it out and took it apart and removed everything removable. I was going to the cinema so I only put it on my radiator, the heat was on 3/5, and left it on there for 2hours (the phone was on the bumper so it was not in direct contact with the radiator). When I got home from the cinema i tried to turn it on (***** move), it turned on but the screen was black, so i put it in rice and it has been in there since. I the phone out of the rice about 10 minutes ago to check it, it turned on but the screen would not work. I checked to see if it would charge and it did, but it was only plugged in for a few seconds(the phone was mabye turned on for 1 minute absolute max). I put it into rice again now. Is my phone phucked? or is there still a chance?

Put it in rice and let sit over night the rice will pull the moisture out of the phone

I dropped my phone in the sink. It barely got wet at the bottom. I took the back off immediately. No water got under or really on the batter just in the speaker. I plugged it in to see if it still charges. It did. I took the battery out and unscrewed the price at the bottom where the speaker is. And left it out. Took a shower. Got out. Out It All Back Together. The speaker works like it did but NOW it won't charge. What do I do :(

Re: Please help drop galaxy s4 in water

I dropped my phone in the toilet. I turned it on afterwards and it worked. but the screen wont respond to the touch. The power button is all that works. I put it in rice and it still wont work.

Rice is wayyy over rated, I do a lot of phone repairs and I've seen phones that have been left In rice for upwards of a week and when I pull it apart there is still pools (not condensation or beads but actual pools) of water. This all depends on the time spent submerged. If it was very brief you should pull the battery and sim/sd cards and leave it in a warm spot like on a window seal with a lot of sunlight or near your stove (be careful of splattering grease while cooking) after a day or two re assemble and test it, if this doesn't work and you don't have insurance, first step is a new battery, this should be enough to salvage it. If it was submerged long enough to get into your motherboard you need to completely pull it apart ASAP (tutorials can be found on ifixit.com) but this will void any and all warranties, clean all of your components with a soft bristled toothbrush and 90% isopropyl alcohol to evaporate the water and avoid corrosion. After pulling it apart leave it in a warm place just like before.

Water damage is the most common problem I run into and this is my go-to solution, it usually works unless the phone has been sitting in rice for so long that the water stagnated over a component for so long that the corrosion had already ruined something, at that point I get on amazon and order new components and swap them out.
So in short here are the basic steps to take:
1) pull battery, don't worry about turning it off, just yank it while it's running (time is of the essence)
2) evaluate how much water made it in
-my rule of thumb is if it was deeper than a foot and/or retrieval wasn't immediate assume the worst and pull it apart to clean
3) get on ifixit and find a full tear down tutorial and get to work

Hi Stargate! You're great help!

My mom dropped her phone into the sea but she was able to pick it up in a few seconds. I wasn't there at the time and she didn't realize she has to wash it down with fresh water first. (Which, by the way, is not crazy at all for me because i know salt would corrode(?) the thing and not just water.) Anyway, she dried it out for a few days but it still won't turn on.

Do you think I could still wash it down with fresh water and/or alcohol?

TIA!

It does not submerge in water for up to 2 minutes...Mine was accidentally knocked in bathtub water by my 2 year old and completely submerged for about 20 seconds. I took out battery immediately; not SD and sim card, and dried it off, and tried to turn it back on (do not do this, it fried the battery). It started turning on and off, and then reset itself and proceeded to download overnight, and seemed to work in the morning, but would not hold a charge. At that point, I put it in rice for the day, and after I took it out (put it in rice for 3 days and remember to take out the SD and Sim Card), it does not charge at all now. Going to try a new battery. In the future, I think I'll bite the bullet and get insurance. Good luck! :)

I don't think insurance will cover phones dropped in water. They check the moisture indicators.

That's what insurance is for. Squaretrade and Carrier provided insurance will cover this.

Moisture indicators turned red will void your factory warranty only.

I dropped my Samsung s4 in the toilet 2 days ago. Tried to turn it on straight away then charged it before taking the battery out to dry the phone.placed it into dry rice as soon as I could 2 hours after. I have tried 2 days now drying it and turning it on. Nothing, have it lost my chance of turning my phone on again,or is there something else I could try?

I would say it's a gonner. If your phone gets wet. First thing you do is shut it off, remove the battery, and put it in rice. Unfortunately you did the 2 worst things when a phone gets wet.

Re: Please help drop galaxy s4 in water

I wish you weren't wrong, I recently dropped my S4 in water, was literally only in there for 2 or 3 seconds, and it completely wrecked it, screen wont work, nothing, wrecked.

Re: Please help drop galaxy s4 in water

Time is of the essence . If u can't rice it and power off then the chance I'd low. But I do have a good friend who's gone thru same but followed these steps ASAP and the phone was not functional. .

That's a valid question, I had totally forgot about that one!

First thing is first in all cases, if a device gets wet you must pull the battery, SIM card, and SD card out (if possible of course).
And since we're talking crazy, there's also an alternative way to save a wet phone: Alcohol! Because it attracts water.
The alcohol method works best with phones that got damaged by salt water or coffee.

You'll need denatured alcohol, or a 95% alcohol solution, I think regular rubbing alcohol is about 75 %. However, make sure the alcohol you use is denatured with only methanol. The chemicals found in other types can be damaging to your device. I've seen this alcohol at hardware stores.

Soak up all the water in the phone with alcohol and then dump the liquid, after that only alcohol will remain, don't worry, it will evaporate, just leave it at a dry place for at least a couple of days.

I know this is an old thread but just a quick question(s), I notice denatured alcohol is mentioned. We call it Methylated Spirits where I am; I've seen on various PC forums some advice not to use this as it may damage the lacquer/laminate on the PCB, how far true is this? Is it possible to get a step-by-step for this process? My phone is sitting in a big bag of rice right now since I left it out in the rain on Sunday while I was working on my car, it sat on top of another car in the rain for quite a bit before I realised my brainfart and picked it up. As I rushed to shove it as deep as it would go in a 10kg bag of rice, pulling out the battery along the way, I clicked the home key and the screen lit up and I saw I had 1 missed call notification from when my dad had tried to phone me earlier....Also, I forgot to remove the SIM and memory card, any possibility of damage to these two? I'm going to check the LDIs when I get home (at work right now) and hold out for hope that I don't see that little pink strip I saw on my beloved Blackberry all those years ago.

doh..! My blackberry z30 just got wet by rain..The problem is it has a non removable battery..! after repeated attempts to switch it on ,Put it in a bag of rice waiting and counting.! Hope it helps.!

guys i dropped my phone in toilet , i took it out immediately and dried it with towel. my phone was on. after few min i realized its serious issue. it took 4-5 min to take the battery out. my phone in that time wasnt off. i tried to turn it off. i dried everything by towel after that i put it in rice. then after 5 hours i tried to use vacuum and clean it. then i put it in rice again. as my friend suggest i switch it on to check it after 10 hour. it turned on and i put charger to recharge it, but the screen not working to unlock the phone. i put it in rice again. i feel still it was wet. never listen to anyone in that case. lol:-\
