I still don't get it? Please someone explain 2.1 verse 2.2 what is the big differance and Google over Bing? I just must be missing something. Thanks JT

JIT Compiler is the big step in 2.1 to 2.2. It makes the OS quite a bit faster. Bing over google? Well...Bing blows goats. It is the same concept as Apple being forced to install Internet Explorer on their computers instead of their native web browser.

Okay thats a little better but still doesn't reall explain what 2.2 is going do. "BING BLOWS"? Okay if you say so. I have no issues. One search engine seems to work as well as another. I have used Google and Bing, Yahoo. Thanks JT

The BIGGEST difference between 2.1 and 2.2 was the support for full Flash and the ability to store apps on the SD card, that was basically Google's big draw with the release of FroYo. Along with some under the hood changes, but the end user doesn't notice those nearly as much.

As for the whole Google/Bing situation, I think it all comes down to the principle of the fact. One of the biggest draws of Android is it's complete integration with Google services, especially Google search and Gmail. With Verizon's decision to completely do away with Google in favor of Bing, and not even give the user a choice to switch back, it left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths.

Ok some advantages of 2.2 over 2.1 like J32 was trying to express is JIT compiler, Jit compiler helps Android (in simplest words) to move faster you will see a significant. also you will have native adobe flash, in short it will let you see more web based videos and web based games on your device like you would on your computer browser. Also 2.2 allows you to save applications directly to your Micro SD card so you can save on board space. It also has a bunch of under the hood tweaks that lets the Android OS process more quickly and smoothly.

As far as Bing,,,,there is no inherent problem with Bing its a good browser but it is not googles browser and most of us like Android for the google experience and most people do not like the fact that we do not have the option of not having something else as our default browser, instead of having Bing shoved down our throats.

Hope this helps a bit

Probably the best anti-Bing explaination I've heard. Clear and simple.

Just fyi Android 2.2 supports wired tether, with 2.1 you can only do it wirelessly. Wireless has its advantages (tethering more than one device, portability) but I want a wired option to save bandwidth and battery life while I'm on the train using my laptop

Good point i forgot about tethering

Yeah, I'm newb to the Fascinate and Android and my plan on day one was to root and dump all the bloat and Bing. Grrr HOW DARE THEY I SEZ! The Bing/VZW Bloat and the delay on Froyo were the only negative for the phone and I figured I could fix them all on my own.

To be honest thus far I'm happy with everything. I don't need a search widget and the search button I just ignore for the time being. I am just blown away by everything having come from a WM 6.1 device so it's understandable that everything seems wonderful at the moment.

I agree the principle of choice is one of the draws of Android and I will eventually make this phone my own, but for the time being I'm happy as a clam and I'm just going to wait for (hopefully) upcoming OTA updates before breaking the root seal.

If I could go into settings and switch everything over to Google I'd do it in a second. VZW sticking the Bing app right next the VZW Navigator is forgivable, but having no choice is just not cool.

Would be kind of ironic if "the principle of choice" is why people are angry with VZW forcing Bing on them when Google forces... well, Google on people.

My phone is rooted, custom DJ05 rom, custom kernel and a custom theme. I was planning to tear it apart from the get go, so I picked the phone who's hardware/screen I liked the best. :)

Yes of course there is some hypocrisy over at the "Do no Evil" place. I mean let's face it they are an advertising company and they don't necessarily have our best interests in mind.

It's just in comparison to certain other fruity companies they are very open. Ideally I'd want stock untouched Android with pre-unlocked sudo access. Part of the choice does come from doing a few nefarious things and rooting etc. but using say a Nexus One as the "ideal" while all the google apps/services are there I don't believe you are forced to use them (could be wrong).

Just out of curiosity - since Bing is now available on the Market could someone with a non-Bing'd phone ... Bing their phone?

Has anyone tried to use the Bing voice search? It is absolutely HORRIBLE! It hardly works, then when it does, it takes forever to understand you. Then once it actually hears you, it errors and says to speak slower.

When I use the Google voice search, it works flawlessly every time.

Just thought I would add that.

lol, I read this wrong at first. I thought you called the fruity company open, almost fell out of my chair.

Yea, I agree. I wasn't attacking or downplaying your comment, just found the comment in regards to "choice" kind of funny.

Good question, I have bing on my phone (although I've de-binged most of it), but I've never used it... yet.

+1 And Google voice search does it with one less button press. Google voice search 'knows' when you're done speaking and goes and does it's search, with bung you have to press a button to tell it you're done speaking.

Maybe they've improved bung but I always referred to Google as a 'search' engine and bung as a 'suggestion' engine. bung always seemed to return results that were dancing all around what I asked for while Google returned results for exactly what I was asking for (ya know, what a search engine is supposed to do).

Maybe that's the reasoning behind "Decision Engine" -- you don't get to decide what you're searching for, it makes that decision for you, and you better like it! :P
