Plz help me root i have never done it

PLZ help me root my LG Viper I have tried so many times and have downloaded so much stuff and I can't figure it out. I have followed step after step to a tee. but somewhere along the line the computer won't acknowledge my phone being plugged up to it. I am new to this plz help!!! Oh yea and how do you tell if it is ran off of OS or ICS?

Of android version is above 4, it's ICS, if it's below 2.4, it's GB
