I've been using Joyride which was working perfectly for what I want. I stream podcasts. I want to open AA access a list of updated subscribe pods and start streaming. Joyride did this simply and effectively. However, Joyride got bought by google and the app no longer works. I tried beyond pod before and thought it was not very good. Any recommendations? I will be trying some new apps on the ride home today.

I love Pocketcasts! I've never used Joyride, so I can't compare the two, but it'll definitely do what you want: keep a list of subscriptions to podcasts and add new episodes when they are uploaded.

Another cool feature is that you can create lists for offline playback. For example, if you want a certain podcast for offline playback, just create a new list and filter for just that podcast. It will automatically download any new episodes for that show at the time you specify on wifi so you don't eat up your data plan.

I was using JoyRide until they discontinued service and I moved to PlayerFM. So far it works well for me but I have only used it more from the phone with headphones and only once or twice with Android Auto just to check it out.

I tried playerfm yesterday. It works fine except for lacking the FF and Rev buttons. Why are they missing? I guess I will have to buy pocketcasts. Annoying that I have to buy a $4 app to replace one that was working just fine until google bought the company.

I don't think you'll regret switching to Pocketcasts, but just FYI, Pocketcasts doesn't have that functionality in Android Auto either.

I think you can only skip 30 seconds in one direction (don't remember which one) and even that option is in another menu and not on the main screen.

For some reason, none of the music apps have ff or rw in Android Auto. I'm not sure why Google thought it was a good idea to leave out that functionality, maybe they deemed it too distracting? Most cars have steering wheel controls that can easily seek through a song, so it's not much different from hitting next.

seriously? You can't FF 30 sec from the player screen in pocket casts? I can't believe Joyride was the only player with this function in AA.

I don't think so. I can double check when I get back to my car in about an hour or so, but I thought it was on the second menu.

You can set the skip and replay buttons individually, to any number of seconds you like. I have mine set to 60 and 30 respectively.

So the issue is the AA interface only shows prev/next and not rw/ff. PlayerFM has a toggle in playback settings for Bluetooth/remote controls to skip within the episode. Not sure if this would work under AA interface.

Correct. And I checked my app when I got to my car and there is no 30 second forward, there is only a play speed option.

I haven't seen any interface modifications for pocketcasts for Android auto.

I'll submit a feedback notice with the developer and see what they say about adding a rw/ff.

The buttons on the AA interface are for skip/replay.

And that's the problem. There should also be a rewind and fast forward. There's no reason for why that functionality isn't there.

Ok to be clear. In pocketcasts, if I press the "forward arrow button" in AA does it 1) skip to the next podcast 2) skip ahead a certain amount of time (e.g. 30 sec) in the presently playing podcast?

Edit: should have tried it first. It's the second one. It does skip 30 seconds or so forward or backward.

I guess the individual apps can program those buttons to do what they want. Pocketcasts assume you want to skip 30 seconds ahead, music players assume you want to skip songs.

playerfm definitely skips to next podcast in AA and there does not appear to be a way to change it. Joyride had both types on AA player screen

I think we are getting caught up in semantics here. 'Skip' skips forward however many seconds you have set in the app, 'replay' goes backward. Pocket Casts has a separate setting (in seconds) for each.

Sorry for the confusion, I just realized this today: skip in every other music app is skip to the next item, but skip in Pocketcasts is fastforward. I was assuming the skip function was universal but that was incorrect.

I've had good luck with Beyond Pod, I was able to get it 50% off. It does have FF/RW buttons in addition to the standard track fw/track rewind buttons. The ff buttons are great when they do the in-podcast ads or if you focus on driving and want to hear something that was said. You can download your casts ahead of time and set a playlist pretty easily before getting on road.

thanks. I tried beyond pod and you are right that it has the FF/REV buttons. However, Beyond pod (as far as I can tell) does not show a list of all podcasts in your subscription and then be able to choose to steam one of them (in the AA interface). Beyond pod only shows the downloaded or most recent pod available in AA.

I've been using playerfm and it does what I want in terms of function except for the FF/REV buttons.
