I'm kind of a cell phone camera newb, usually just take my pics with everything on auto settings. I am a little confused about the purpose of live focus, I've tried a few times and kept the distance the phone told me to, but the pictures didn't come out very good. I thought live focus blurs the background a bit and should focus in more on the main target from what I've read.

Are there any special circumstances where I'd definitely want to use live focus over regularly shooting a pic ?

Trying to get the most out of the Note camera, I appreciate any replies.

Taking photos indoors, or where the light is not very bright, then the picture will look kind of blurry. It's best done outside. Also make sure your target photo is very still otherwise it will blurs the sides of the target too.

It's mainly used for portraits where the cam can identify a subject correctly and yes adequate lighting is important...

I've taken some absolutely fantastic pictures with it personally

Here's one of my daughter ( of course with her face hidden for anonymity ) I know uploading will degrade it a bit but hopefully not too much

Edited to add photo with and without effect

Love your picture! It might help the OP if you upload the "normal" version of the picture so she could see the difference. I love that there are 2 versions to choose from, and you can save one or both individually.

The best way to see the effect of live focus is to press the live focus button, take the shot under the right conditions, and then compare the "normal" version with the the live focus one. In addition to the optical zoom factor, the background is slightly blurred (you can adjust how much). This effect gives your image the illusion of having more depth. I love the motion picture setting most of all, but live focus can can you some great shots, too! I especially love the ability to save both pictures or just one of them.
