Yep big benefit. You get maps on screen and Google assistant at your call with OK Google. Basically you can control your phone all via the assistant and see it on the screen.

Ok I appreciate the info

I have a late model hi end audio system with AA and CP...but I just don't get it...It is so much easier to talk to my phone as it is. I just use BT. I like the darker nav screen on my phone. Although for a longer trip I use the cars nav.

On shorter drives I also like to get the phone charged on something with higher amperage than the USB for the AA provides.

All of ours cars are AA capable, so we use it for navi, music, phone calls, texts, general information and home automation. Sadly, the P3 XL only charges slowly while using AA, so we returned them and are sticking with the P2 XL.

If I had Nav on my car I probably wouldn’t use AA or CP, but I opted out of paying the $1000 here in Canada for on-board Nav.

I find AA much more useful than the onboard nav. Better graphics with satellite view enabled, and with traffic view Google maps negates the need for a SXM traffic subscription. Also, there is no expense involved with map updates as there is with an inbuilt system.

Just my $.02....

I'm actually planning on trading in my 2013 Equinox for a 2019 Equinox that will have Android Auto, I can't wait to try it out!

^^^this

I've had really good on board nav, and they all suck and get out of date quickly. Google maps is far and away better then anything stock in a car. The updates to in car are pricey as hell.

AA is nice the few times I've used it. Wish my car was compatible.

with AA, I find it's more often subject to not starting... Or just stopping... In comparison to car play. I use both. Both work. Car play works more often. That's all i meant....

I haven't had that at all. I can ask assistant for anything and it will behave like with my phone. Also haven't had it stop.

Same with CarPlay. Plug and go.

I use it. sometimes it works great, sometimes a bit of a trouble with going from calls to streaming or radio, dialing out... assorted other stuff. I use it just about every time I drive.

Another Yes vote !
I have used both Android Auto and CarPlay. I haven't had an issue with either of them .So far they both performed flawlessly :D

AA is one of my very favorite things to use my phone for.
I've been using it for a couple of years now and it gets plugged in as soon as I start my car every time.
Navigation, streaming music, texting and calling, google assistant. I use it all the time. Even MLB at bat.
Hands free for everything.
How convenient to be driving and all of a sudden need to navigate somewhere on the fly and just press the button on my steering wheel, dictate where to navigate to and go.
Anyone that has it available to them in their car should be plugging in as soon as you get in the car.
Not to mention that it charges your phone too. Not as fast as regular car charger or wall plug in, but it charges and gains a charge even with everything working hard.

I have a Windows phone currently and planning on replacing it with an Android phone (hopefully soon). I am hoping Android Auto can do what I have been using on my WP.

Some of the features that I like how the WP handles, and want to find a means to duplicate it on Android (with Android Auto and/or other apps) includes:
  1. When the phone connects to my Bluetooth dongle (that connects to my radio) it offers to go into Driving mode.
  2. Driving mode automatically mutes all of my alerts and allows me to set whether or not to Ignore calls and/or Ignore texts. I normally allow these 2, but everything else is muted.
  3. When I get a text message and in driving mode, the phone
    1. turns off the music it is playing (through the speakers using the bluetooth dongle)
    2. Speaks that I got a message, and from whom.
    3. Asks if I want it read or ignored.
    4. If I say "read" it will read the text message and then offer to Reply, Call back or be done.
I usually just listen to text messages because getting Cortana to transcribe a reply correctly would be too distracting. At least I can listen to it in case it is important enough to pull over and make a call. Be handy if I could answer phone calls by voice command rather than having to tap the large button.

Can this be done with Android Auto and/or some collection of other Android Apps?

Just bought a Kia Stinger and have been using Android Auto. It will take some getting use to. Kia UVO has some nice feature but I prefer google maps to the UVO navigation.

Yes! I love Android Auto! That is literally half the reason I bought my 2016 Volkswagen GTI, because it had Android Auto in the Dash Display.

however I been annoyed recently with it on my One plus 5, ever since the Android 8.1 Aug 1st security patch it won't make phone calls through the blue tooth speakers with Android Auto. I have to clear all Bluetooth app data to get it to work each time I connect. Although I blame that on OnePlus.

I have a 2018 Ford Escape and I use AA daily. I keep the phone tucked away in center console. I have two phones, and was thinking of getting a dual SIM phone, but AA work with it, unless one SIM is set to default.

You pretty much described how AA works.

1) Driving mode, yes.
2) Driving mode will mute your notifications, yes. It will still allow calls & texts, yes.
3) 1: When you get a text, it will play your text alert tone through the car audio system and show a pop up at the top of the vehicle's infotainment system.
3) 2: You can tap the pop up, or say "hey Google read my messages". It will then tell you who the text is from, and ask to read the message to you.
3) 3: You will then be asked if you want to reply.
3) 4: See above.

Replying to messages is pretty accurate via voice. Optionally, you can call that contact via voice command as well; all without touching the phone. To answer, you do have to tap either the icon on the screen or your steering wheel button.

Hope this info helps. :)
