Poll: Which Manufacturer do you think will get the next Nexus?

Which OEM to get the next Nexus?

I don't think Moto will get it. Google can already control them indirectly. The nexus is a great chance to reach out and work directly with another OEM. Why would Google waste that chance on a company they already own? It would just alienate the other OEM's further.

That being said, the nexus manufacturer has more to do with hardware sense software is out of their hands. Motorola has never had very inspiring hardware. HTC would be a great choice. Asus would be good as well. I have no experience with Sony phones. LG will probably get it again. They have done a good job twice now and seem to like the project.

There is zero chance that Moro will build the next Nexus. Maybe even less than that.
The Nexus is known for having top notch specs. Moto is going in a different direction than that.
The Nexus gets fast updates, Moto has shown they can be plenty fast enough without being a Nexus.
Moto has a lot of work to do to return to profitability, they would be foolish to waste resources on a niche product(face it, the Nexus is not meant for the general public, its for a specific, small segment of the population)
How upset would other OEMs be if the first two phone models(the Nexus and the next X) to be updated were the phones produced by the company owned by Google. Even if Google doesn't show favoritism, it should would look like they were.
There are just too many factors pointing against Moto making a Nexus any time soon.

I'm not so sure about that. The fact is that the OEM's have access to the updates as soon as everyone else does. It's completely up to them to get those updates out to their devices. You'd have to think that if the OEM's didn't insist on putting their own skins and bloatware on top of Android, that they could potentially get updates pretty quickly.

Motorola doesn't need to make a Nexus to be successful.

Not that making the Nexus makes you successful... :)

I can't see how there is anything profitable about producing Nexus devices for the OEMs. They are sold dirt cheap and generally advertised as a "Google" product (i.e. it's the "Google Nexus 4" and not the "LG Nexus 4").

Motorola building the next Nexus would reek of impropriety. With all the talk of RMA's, LG is probably loosing their shirt on these last two releases.

We should have a poll to see just how many members on here have returned their phones and how many they have had to return before they got one that made the cut.

True...but go around to the forums for ANY new device and you'll a ton of comments from folks who've had to return their devices...I don't think think that this is limited to Nexus devices.

I agree about the part that it's an opportunity to work with other OEMs, and this is perhaps why Motorola hasn't produced a Nexus yet. But I'm not sure it would "alienate" other OEMs either...as I said above, whatever motivation the manufacturers have to work with Google on the Nexus devices, it can't be profit or even exposure, as the margins on both are slim...I just don't see OEMs bending over backwards to do it.

And regarding the line about "very inspiring hardware", let's face it, the hardware on Nexus devices isn't always "inspiring"...yes, it's usually top-of-line in terms of performance specs, but Nexus devices tend to also be very "no frills" when it comes to peripheral features. Don't get me wrong, to many of us this is exactly what we're looking for, but in a way this is very similar to the direction Motorola is going with their latest devices. I don't think it would be too much of a stretch for Motorola to produce a device of Nexus caliber either, given the right incentive to do so.

But there is a difference between simplistic and utilitarian. Nexus devices have always been simplistic. Moto devices(maybe with the exception of the X) have always been utilitarian. Like they are made to beat off attackers with or something.

I am not saying moto could not do it, but i am saying that i do not want anything like the squared off surf boards that they are known to make. Hopefully the X will start a trend.

Nexus devices have always been simplistic by comparison. Plain front as possible. Back has ranged from plastic and curved to glass and sparkely. Could really be anything. It is interesting that they are trying to start a standard with the new 7 and 5 having the same look.

The Moto G is of a similar design. So hopefully....

I think no matter which OEM gets it, it'll be my next device come upgrade time in October. I've had a revelation recently that I prefer stock Android or almost stock (current Moto devices).

...And I've had the realization that I'm absolutely done with locked down bootloaders. Nexus all the way from here on out for me, even if it means I finally have to leave Verizon.

I've actually considered that looking at the nexus 4 and 5 but we're still under contract at the moment

There is a rumor that TMo will introduce covering your ETF with another carrier if you sign up with them. But, like I said, a rumor.

That'd be pretty sweet. Don't know much about TMo's coverage though. That's one reason I don't want to leave VZW

Fair enough. Check out Sensorly.com, that is a coverage map but one that is provided by voluntary users of their app. Kind of a double edged sword; while more truthful than the carrier maps, but still technically incomplete due to not everyone who has each carrier is reporting, either.

Thanks GD97! I'll look into that
